League play set to begin for MHS basketball

Tri Valley League play begins
for Madras High School basket­
ball teams Tuesday, January 17.
B o th the Boys and G irls
teams have a legitimate shot at
the state title this year, and both
teams perform ed exceptionally
in the preseason.
Now, it’s time to focus on
league play and set their sights
on the post season.
L ast year the M adras girls
ended up third in state and have
spent the o ff season and pre­
season working to get back to
the state tournament.
The Madras boys team is led
by Senior Bobby Ahern.
T he W hite Buffaloes com ­
piled a record o f 7-3 in the pre­
season, including three wins in
the Cactus jam in Arizona. Team

not sure yet what career she
might pursue, but college and
basketball are clearly part o f
the picture.

quick player, on offense and
defense. As a freshman, she
is the starting point guard
for the Madras High School
girls basketball team.
She has been playing bas­
ketball since the age o f 4.
G ro w in g up, she played
mostly at the Warm Springs
com m unity. center. Lana
L eonard was her coach at
the middle school.
During summers while in
m id d le sc h o o l, M ariah
played with the MHS var­
sity basketball players; so
starting at point guard as a
high school freshman is not
as surprising as it m ight
seem.

C h allen ge is coming soon. Weigh-in measurements will
be done this Thursday and Friday, Jan. 12-13, at the Warm
Springs community center and at Mountain View Hospital
from 8-10 a.m., 11:30-1:30 p.m., and 4-6 p.m. On Satur­
day, Jan. 14, weigh ins will be done at the hospital only
from 9 a.m.-1p.m. For more information, call Edmund

New Guidelines for School Breakfast & Lunch Programs
The 2011-2012 guidelines for the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs are still
available on the Parent Resources page of the JCSD website. Visit jcsd.kl2.or.us to view the

Welcome to Semester Two!
O n Monday, February 6th, we start the second school semester. While our goal is to have
every student with a complete schedule on the first day, we recognize that some changes may
still be necessary. W ith the upcoming January round of OAKS testing, our counselors will be
busy moving students in and out of appropriate workshop placements. If your student has a
need for a schedule change, please make an appointm ent with, a counselor in the Student
Services office as soon as possible. Students must request an appointm ent by January 2 7 ,2 0 1 2
for the schedule change requests to be honored. Please remember that all schedules are built
based upon the student forecasting that is done every spring. Talk with your student now
about w hat classes they need or would like for next year.

After School Tutoring
Beginning January 12,2012 Jefferson County Middle School will begin an after school tu­
toring program for all students in the school library from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The purpose is to
offer students the academic support needed for them to be successful in school. The focus of
the program is reading and math, but help in all subjects will be available.
M ondays &c Wednesdays - M ath
Tuesdays &c Thursdays - Reading
Parent permission slips are required for participation. Student sign-up is in the main office.
This program runs through end of the year and teachers will document attendance,
Transportation will be available through the W arm Springs Activity bus. For m ore infor­

Master Schedule changes for 2nd Semester
JCMS will be on a new master schedule this semester This change will better meet the
needs o f all our students with respect to safety. It will also create a wider variety of enrichment
opportunities and provide smaller and more consistent learning environments.
This change will occur at the start of the semester on February 6th. Look for your stu­
dent's schedule in the mail during the week of January 23rd through the 27th. We encourage
you to take a look at this information and contact our counselors (Amy Gervais and Seth
Burke) or the JCM S administration (Simon W hite, Diane Dominiak, or Trevor Flaherty) at
(541) 475-7253 if you have any questions.
Cinderella Formal "Midnight Masquerade" is January 14th
Tickets for this "M idnight M asquerade" will go on sale Tuesday, January 3rd. The dance is
from 8:00 to 11:30 p.m., but doors will close at 9:00 p.m. Students can wear masks, but they
m ust be removed to check in. They m ust have their student identification to enter! Prices are
$20 for singles and $30 for couples. These prices will go up $5 at the door.
