Grant helps Big Brothers Big Sisters
Holiday shopping at market
The Madras Flea Market,
with several independent ven
dors, is a great place for
Christmas shopping.
The flea market in Decem
ber is going to have a special
holiday bazaar, “The Last
Minute Christmas Shopping
Bazaar.”
This will be on Dec. 16,
17 and 18. Vendors can get
a 10-by-10 booth with table
for $45 for the whole week
end.
Santa Claus will be at the
market on Dec. 9, 10 and
11. On those days there will
also be free gift-wrapping
with purchase.
Drawings are every Sun
day at 4:30 with many prizes.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Central Oregon has received
$130,000 to strengthen its Tribal
Community Initiative.
The initiative is a culturally
based mentoring program devel
oped to help Native American
children achieve in school and
promote life-long success.
The funds are part o f the O f
fice o f Juvenile Justice and De
linquency Prevention’s $13.3
million investment this year in
Big B roth ers Big Sisters’
mentoring programs to prevent
juvenile delinquency.
This $130,000 award is part
a $2 million dollar allocation of
the Office o f Juvenile Justice
and Delinquency Prevention
(O JJD P ) total grant to Big
Brothers Big Sisters for the
Tribal Community Initiative.
The grant will fund the pair
ings o f a minimum o f 600
American Indian/Alaska Native
youths with positive adult men
tors on 10 reservations/pueb-
los across the country.
Native American staff, with
the help o f advisors and elders,
will carefully match youth with
mentors and provide ongoing
match support to the adult vol
unteers, mentees and children’s
families in an effort to decrease
gang activity, reduce alcohol
and drug abuse, improve aca
demic performance and par-
ent/guardian relationships,
and foster a renewed sense o f
tribal identification for partici
pating youth.
“Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Central Oregon is committed to
serving the Native American
population o f Warm Springs,”
said Mark Wilke, program direc
tor o f Big Brothers Big Sisters
o f Central Oregon.
“This funding will allow us to
m atch 60 N ative Am erican
mentees with mentors from
their own tribal communities
and provide our specialized
m entoring services to even
more children who need us. We
are so pleased that our dedica
tion and contribution in this area
has been recognized.”
