E very Tuesday night at 5:15,
at the Community Center, the
Wasqu Dancers meet. But it’s
not a time for play, it’s a time
for learning discipline and social
dancing.
For the past few weeks, the
children have been practicing
several dances which they per
formed at the museum’s Tribal
Member Art Show opening.
Deannie Johnson, assisted by
Carol Sahme, helped to prepare
the children for their perfor
mance. Parents joined in, teach
ing the children the Welcome,
B ear, Laughing, and Paddle
Dances, among others.
At last week’s Social Danc
ing, the children saw a demon
stration of traditional dancing by
Marie Sampson.
“I’ve been dancing since I
was very young,” Marie said.
“No matter how old you get,
you can still dance. I don’t plan
to stop.”
Sampson told the class how
to keep their regalia clean and
gave them tips on how to look
their best.
“Don’t be afraid to practice
your tradition. Go out there and
be proud. Represent who you
are, but most importantly, have
fun!”
Marie is currently attending
COCC as a financing major.
Springs and the region will
compete; twelve to 15 bouts.
General admission tickets
available at the door. Prize
for the best Halloween cos
tume.
Event begins at 6 p.m.
Changes to holiday celebration
H allow een is ju st over a
week away, but planners for this
year’s com m unity Christm as
celebration are moving forward
fast. The date for this year’s
event has been set for Decem
ber 1, 2011.
L ast year, organizers ex
pected a crowd of about 200
people at the celebration. After
the dust had settled, it was esti
mated that a crowd of about
1,000 people were in atten
dance.
“We expect this trend to con
tinue,” Michael Martinez said at
the last Prevention Coalition
m eeting. “L ast year it was
crowded, so we need to plan
carefully this year.”
Part of the celebration in
cludes the Christmas Light Pa
rade. “We still had people bring
ing in their entries at the last
minute,” Martinez said. “One of

them was the (school) bus, and
they had such an amazing float!”
This year organizers plan to
have prizes for first, second,
third, fourth, and fifth place
parade floats. Another change
planned is the bonfire to help
minimize the indoor crowd.
There will also be two plays
perform ed by the children.
One of the plays w ill be the
N ativity, featurin g a N ative
American theme.
There is still a lot of work to
be done before December. If
you’re interested in becoming a
part of the planning team, vol
unteering, or making a donation,
the next Prevention Coalition
Meeting will be held on Mon
day, October 24, at 1:00 p.m. in
the Family Resources Confer
ence Room.
