Rick IMitor
Superintendent
We’re starting this school
year with some great news.
Our district reading scores are
improving dramatically and
we are so excited to see the
3rd=13% Growth 4th=7% Growth 6th=26% Growth
hard work of our students,
staff and teachers paying off.
As most of you know,
Read-to-Succeed has been a major focus for us over the past several years. We’ve been
working harder than ever to better understand reading instruction and provide the support
needed to help each and every student learn to read at grade level or higher. While we still
have a ways to go, our progress has been amazing. There are several reasons for this
success: 1) our teachers and staff are focused on reading instruction and engaging students
in the classroom; 2) our students are working harder; and 3) our School Board, parents
and families are providing kids with the support and encouragement they need to be
successful readers.
While most of our students are showing reading progress, we continue to identify
our challenges and are focusing our attention on making the needed adjustments and
improvements to succeed.
N ot only have we seen growth in our reading levels, we are also using the success of
our reading focus to improve in other areas such as Writing, M ath and Science.
We thank you for your support and look forward to more success moving forward.
As always, I welcome your input and feedback. Stop by my office or call anytime.

JCSD is proud to announce a new partnership to expand music education in
our local schools. Ethos M usic Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the
promotion of music and music based education for youth in rural communities,
has been awarded an AmeriCorps and Oregon Volunteers grant. Thanks to the
help of parent and community member Jill Plant, our district will have three
AmeriCorps members bringing additional music instruction to all of our class
rooms. Two Ethos AmeriCorp members are currently working in our schools.
Laurel Crafton is working with students at Buff Intermediate and Sarah Goff is
at Jefferson County Middle School. A third AmeriCorp member will be joining
us soon. The intent is to provide general music to all of our elementary students,
vocal music at our middle school along with possible support at M adras High
School and the Kids Club. This is an exciting opportunity for our district.
Ethos was officially organized in 1998 by a dedicated group of volunteer
staff and instructors. The first classes were offered in the basement of the Univer
sity of Portland. Since that time, the organization has moved (and purchased) a
North Portland location and has grown to become one of Oregon’s largest arts
education sources. Welcome and thank you to Ethos for giving us something to
sing about!
The intent is to provide
