Weather helps fires,
but season isn’t over
Literary
mural
Warm Springs artist John
Finch this week is finishing a
colorful mural on the wall of
the children’s area of the
Warm Springs Library.
The mural includes char
acters from children’s litera
ture.
The library, in the Family
Resource Center, sees a
steady stream of patrons on
a daily basis, said Librarian
Craig Graham.
Graham reminds people
who check out books to re
turn them on time, or re
check them out. You can call
the library to re-check a book,
541-553-1078. Library hours
are Monday through Friday,
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Children should have pa
rental supervision.

The fires that have burned
on the reservation this summer
are now about 99 percent con
tained.
Crews this week were still do
ing some mop-up work in the
Badger Butte area, said Warm
Springs Fire and Safety Chief
Dan Martinez.
A Natural Resources team
was also out assessing loss to res
ervation timber.
In all, the High Cascade
Complex fires burned close to
112,000 acres, said Martinez.
Total acreage was close to
that of the 1996 Simnasho fire,
which burned across 116,000
acres.
There are some differences
between the two incidents:
The Simnasho fire was a
single fire; while the High Cas
cades Complex was a number
GOLF
of separate fires a good distance
away from each other.
The challenge was allocating
staff and resources to each
separate fire, said Martinez.
Still, no homes were lost to
the fires. “That was a miracle,”
said Martinez.
On the reservation and in
other parts of the region the
week of cool weather, and
some rain, gave a significant
boost to crews battling the vari
ous wildfires.
Officials, however, warned
that a forecast for hot and dry
weather this week means the
fire season still isn’t over.
The fire season usually ends
around Oct. 1, said Martinez.
Elsewhere, aircraft this week
were pulling out of the Dollar
Lake fire that threatened
Portland’s water supplies.
