Mt. Hood Ski Bowl
Flag Raising Ceremony
by VFW Veterans
and
Blesing Ceremony
by Elders Wilfred & Geraldine Jim
as witnessed by numerous staff of Mt. Hood Ski Bowl as well
as Staff of the Culture & Heritage Language Department
was held on Friday, September 9, 2011
A re-awakening happened on Friday, September 9, 2011
between Mt. Hood and the peaks known as Tom, Dick and
Harry at a placed called Mt. Hood Ski Bowl. Approximaely 60
people from both Warm Springs and Mt. Hood Ski Bowl
attended a Blessing by Warm Springs Elders and a Flag
Ceremony conducted by VFW Post 4217 of Warm Springs to
officially open the doors to the Warm Springs Interpretive
Center on the Mt. Hood Ski Bowl Park East.
The D epartm ents, Lead Ichishkiin Insructor
A rlita Rhoan w ith her G randdaughter
A rlita offered making necklaces and daisy
chain
The ceremony is the result of a series of meetings between
the owner of Mt. Hood Ski Bowl and the Warm Springs Culture
& Heritage program staff designed to fill an information gap
about the historical and continuing presence of the Warm
Springs Tribes in this area. After the blessing and flag cer
emony many community members rode the ski lifts to the top
and picked huckleberries or just enjoyed the view.
In a joint effort between the Tribes and the Mt. Hood Ski Bowl
Park, the newly formed Warm Springs Cultural/lnterpretive
Center will have pictures of families from the Tribes who
traditionally traveled and stayed in this area, interactive kiosks
explaining the importance of the mountains, plants and
animals to the Warm Springs Tribes and much more. This
marks the beginning of a strong and positive partnership that
will benefit not only our tribal people but many of the over 4
million annual visitors to this area.
A lot of the Mt. Hood Ski Bowl Staff were in
atttendance and witnessed the ceremony and heard
some history of our elders that were present.
The Warm Springs Cultural / Interpretative Cetner is to be
located at Ski Bowl East, will open its doors
December 1,2011.
