Deer Ridge powwow

At the main fire camp at the industrial park, hundreds of fire fighters set up tents.
Native American inmates at
the Deer Ridge Correctional
Facility will host the first pow
wow at the prison on Friday,
Sept. 23.
The powwow, to be held in
an outdoor area at the facility,
will be from 8 a.m. till 3:30 p.m.
The inmates are inviting
Warm Springs community
members to come and share in
event.
Dancers, drummers, elders,
spiritual leaders and all others
are welcome.
A person can attend if he or
she has not been incarcerated
and charged with a crime in the
past five years.

The inm ates have made
gifts to give away during the
powwow, gifts such as hand-
drums, jewelry, drawings and
beadwork.
At the powwow there will be
traditional drumming and danc
ing, a salmon bake and barbe
cue.
There are about 30 Native
American inmates serving time
at Deer Ridge. There are four
inmates who are from Warm
Springs. Total inmate population
is over 760, all minimum secu
rity. The medium security part
of the prison has not yet
opened. Deer Ridge is on 200
acres east of Madras.
