any timber industry or other

rises, more strict regulations
will be implemented.

during the season, the restric
tions will follow the regulations
covered by the National Fire
Danger Rating System, Indus
trial Fire P revention Levels

restrictions proposed for travel, purchasing and hiring
(Continued from page 1)
“This will be a total of ten
furlough days total between now
and year end. This will result in
a savings of
balance the 2011 budget and
w ork on balancing the 2012
bud get through the budget
c y c le .” $339,350 in gen eral
fund.”
Som e d epartm ent excep
tions to the furlough day are
recommended, including Fire
and Safety, Patrol, Gaming/

home workers, and other “es
sential employees.”
The first furlough day would
be Monday, August 8, followed
by August 22, September 12,
etc. Further recommendations
are:
All general fund hiring be
restricted starting A ugust 1
through the remainder of the
year. Leaving the current vacant
positions unfilled would equal
about $700,000 in savings.
All general fund travel ex-
penses would be restricted.
Departments would also stop
the purchase o f unnecessary
items that are not essential for
the departm ents’ im m ediate
function.

were not in favor of the fur
lough day proposal, while real
izing som ething needs to be
done to the balance the budget.
“I have concerns about em
ployees being able to pay their
bills and put food on the table,”
said Councilman Ron Suppah.

The furlough idea was clearly
the least po pu lar p ropo sal
among Council members, and
department and branch super
visors.
S-T Calica said, “Nothing is
set in stone and Management is
working diligently to find cost
containment solutions that cause
as little impact to the services
provided to the community and
tribal member employment. But
something needs to be done to
balance the 2011 budget, and we
will work on balancing the 2012
budget through the budget
cycle.”
