Simnasho family escapes house fire

A family of four lost their
home in the late hours of Sat
urday, Nov 20, in Simnasho,
when the house known as “atwai
Ina Tohet’s old house” caught
fire.
“There was just me and my
two girls home at the time,”
Victoria Medina said. “I woke
up and I smelled smoke.”
From under the bedroom
door, Medina could see the fire
and smoke coming from her liv
ing room. She touched the door
and found it to be hot.
“By then,” she said, “the
whole living room was up in
flames, it happened that fast.”

crawled out a window with her
children and ran to a neighbor’s
house for help.
At 11:48 p.m. Warm Springs
Fire & Safety arrived to find the
home fully engulfed in flames.

The home and vehicles were completely destroyed.
“They fought the fire for
approximately three hours with
two engines, five firefighters,

Juanita Majel said.
All family members escaped
safely. However, the family pet,
a pit-bull named “Homegirl”,
was lost. It is believed that com
plications with a wood burning
stove ignited the blaze.
The structure and all its con
tents were deemed a total loss.

of fuel. Crews found a minor
leak that was quickly contained.
There were no other vehicles in
volved and no injuries were re
ported.
A Hazmat clean-up crew out
of Prineville, and the Oregon
Department of Transportation
Hazmat team worked to pump
the fuel from the wrecked tanker
into a second tracto r-trailer
tanker.
The wrecked tanker trailer
was later towed from the scene.
Assisting in the Hazmat clean
up effort were Warm Springs
Fire and Safety and Police, and
tribal environmental officials.
Fire and Safety would like to
remind residents to drive safely
this winter. Carry traction de
vises or chains, extra food and
w ater, extra blankets, w arm
clothing and a cell phone when
traveling the winter mountain
passes.

nity and the services provided.
It’s one decision that’s going to
need to be made.”
Calica explained three differ
ent scenarios to balance the bud
get. “So it’s not up to me to con
vince you of the value of these
projects. I listen to my chief,
Delvis. When he talks, I know
he has wisdom. I also need to
listen to you as far as putting
budgets together. It’s been tough
putting this together, and I know
that it’s going to be worse in
2012 and 2013.”
“I don’t approve o f this,”
Lyle Rhoan Sr. said. “I’m against
it, and I’m going to protest. I
encourage my district represen
tatives to vote no on it, turn it
down. When we come up with
an idea for a wind farm, it’s not
good enough. But when an out
sider comes in with an idea,
$100,000 later you jump on it.
Common sense is enough here.”
“When we first started out,”
Tribal Councilman JP Patt said,
“I thought the BIRF was going
to be providing funds to start a
lot of small businesses in Warm
Springs. I misspoke. It’s actually
going to going towards busi
nesses like telecom, which will
eventually displace Qwest on the
reservation. The only decision
we make is yes or no. I’m not
satisfied with the way this pro

tics Department would like to
have all persons who are inter
ested in getting a tribal identifi
cation card to do so before
December 10.
Usually there is a long line on
the second and third week of
December, and that makes it
hard to complete other paper
work needed to be done.

ID, come into the office as soon
as p o ssib le ,” said O livia

Community food drive
A Warm Springs community
food drive continues until 5 p.m.
this Friday, Dec. 3.
Bring non-perishable foods
such as canned goods, macaroni,
rice, beans, cereals and dried
items.
A box for donations will be
in all pods at the Warm Springs
Health and Wellness Clinic. Pas
tor Rick Ribeiro will pick up and
distribute the donations. This
drive is sponsored by the Warm
Springs Health and Wellness
Employee Appreciation Com

“Financial Skills for Families”
began on Nov. 29 but contin
ues for three more sessions this

said, “I’m thankful for that. We
got out of a burning house with
just each other.”

Truck wreck closes highway 26
A tanker truck accident seven
miles north of Warm Springs
forced the closure of Highway
26 for twelve hours, Nov. 23.
W arm Springs Fire and
Safety and Warm Springs Police
were dispatched to the scene at
12:40 a.m. on Nov. 23.
Upon arriv al, the crew s
found one tanker trailer on its
side in the highway.
The tractor-trailer and at
tached tanker were still up right
and undamaged.
