W.S. organizing own Little League
By Dave McMechan
Spilyoy Tymoo
Warm Springs supporters of
Little League are working to
ward forming a local charter of
the youth T-ball, baseball and
softball organization.
Warm Springs has been part
o f Je ffe rso n C oun ty L ittle
League, but the goal is to have a
separate Warm Springs Little
League charter by the beginning
o f the 2010 season, said Danni
Katchia, a coordinator o f the
project.
A first priority is the estab
lishm ent o f a Warm Springs
Little League board, she said.
Toward this goal, and for
general information, the sup
porters are holding a meeting on
Monday, Jan. 18 at the commu
nity center starting at 6 p.m.
T he W arm Springs L ittle
League board will need a presi
dent and vice-president, player
agent, secretary, safety officer,
treasurer and inform ation of
ficer.
In the past, Warm Springs
community members have vol
u n te ered to serve as L ittle
League coaches and umpires,
and on the Jefferson County
Little League board.
With its own charter, volun
teers will be needed to fill the
Warm Springs board positions
as well, said Katchia.
“We need the community to
support this to make it happen,”
said Katchia.
The Warm Springs board will
operate under its own constitu
tion and by-laws, and will hold
regular meetings.
Last year Jefferson County
Litde League had 17 teams, in
cluding T-ball, baseball and soft-
ball. Warm Springs youth made
up a majority of the players, said
Katchia.
The teams formed under the

The boundary o f Jefferson
County Litde League used to
include the reservation, but last
year Jefferson County Little
League redrew the boundary to
end at the reservation border.
The logical boundary for the
new Warm Springs Litde League
district would be the reservation,
said Katchia.
T h e separation o f W arm
Springs from Jefferson County
Little League is a big step, al
though the change will not be
much in many ways, said Louise
Katchia, who is helping to or
ganize the new league.
Warm Springs already has
been acting for the m ost part
independently within Jefferson
County Litde League, she said.
