on the same frequency; so
dispatch could n o t address
the departm ents separately,

utilities communications.”
Total cost for a new system
is about $110,000. T hrough the
Planning Departm ent, the tribes
obtained a Hom eland Security
grant to cover the cost, and the
new system was recently in
stalled.
T here is a primary console,
and a backup. Also, pohce and
fire can talk w ith dispatch on
two separate frequencies.
T he new system is a major
im provem ent for the reserva
tion, but a lot stiE needs to be
done, Haas said.
“T his was a first step in a
long-term process,” he said.
A next step will be a 120-
fo o t teleco m m u n icatio n s
tower on MiEer Flat, at a site
ow ned by the tribes.

greater coverage o f the res
ervation. Ultimately, H aas
said, the goal would be to
connect the reservation with
fiber optics.
