Tribes receive $250,000 prevention grant
about a month, a very short time
for producing a $250,000 grant
application.
Cruz took the lead in produc
ing the application, and the
tribes learned recendy that the
application was successful.
With the money, Cruz said,
the tribes can fund two posi
tions, a methamphetamine pre
vention position, and a mental
health position to work on sui-
Caroline Cruz had been gen
eral manager of tribal Human
Services for a very short time
when she learned that a large
g ra n t—-in the am ount o f
$250,000— could be available to
the tribes.
The money could fund a two-
year methamphetamine-suicide
prevention program.
The problem was that the
grant application was due within
cide prevention.
Learning that the grant appli
cation had been approved, she
said, was great news, especially
since the tribes will face budget
constraints going into 2010.
The methamphetamine-sui
cide prevention grant is a good
example o f the grant money
th at can be available to the
tribes.
T h e d ep artm en ts in her
branch, she said, rely a great deal
on grants and other outside
funding, and use a relatively
small percentage o f tribal gen
eral fund dollars.
She estimated that at least
$1.5 million o f her overall H u
m an Services budget comes
from outside. And there may
be more grants out there that
the tribes could access, she
said.
