Letters to the Editor
Loogie Luau
To the community o f Warm
Springs,
The 2009 Children’s Protec
tive Services Loogie Luau was
another big success!
We were very happy with the
turnout, which was more than
last year, so, Thank you all who
came down and we hope it was
just as enjoyable for you as it
was for us.
The CPS staff would also like
to thank the following for help
ing us and being a part o f the
success:
Warm Springs Meth Coali
tion, who sponsored the Native
Rapper, “Supaman,” Supaman
himself (awesome job!) Pordand
Partyworks, for all the water play
equipment, Warm Springs Fire
Management, for volunteering
and helping where we needed,
Warm Springs Recreation De
partment, for use of their facil
ity, DJ K9, for all the cool, sum
mer-fun music, the city of Cul
ver for the dunk-tank, and Pat
Tanewasha for the prayer for
the meal.
We would also like to say
“Thank you” to all the partici
pants in our contests, especially
the Fear Factor Easting Contest.
Corey Smith was the overall
champion this year, Way to go!
We didn’t know how you did it!
CPS enjoys doing different
kinds of family events, because
it is good to see families having
a good time and doing things
positive with each other. Hope
fully we can continue doing this
annual event for years to come.
Thanks, again... until next year!
Warm Springs CPS staff.
PS: Mark your calendars for
our Third Annual Round Robin
Softball Tournament July, 24 at
the Warm Springs softball fields.
Hope to see you there.
Greetings
Tlaaxw na’mi naimuma, All
my relations:
Greetings from your best
friend.
G reetings from the best
friend of all your ancestors.
Greetings from the ones who
helped you War against your
enemies.
Greetings from the ones who
help you dig roots, where no car
can go.
Greetings from your silent
partner who shows you game to
hunt, and who lets you aim be
tween the ears.
Greetings from those of us
who bear your burdens and carry
your heavy game.
We are true friends to those
of your kind, who treat us with
respect and honor.
The gentle and loving we
welcome into our herd and
touch noses.
We feel your caress and of
fer our backs so you too can
ride with the wind.
And for your kindness we
gratefully eat wild grasses to
hinder fire from destroying your
land.
Where we are not found, fire
seeks.
What is this the earth trem
ors speak to us? Our best friends
now seek to slaughter us and
feed us to their dogs?
How have we harmed you to
have you turn on us in this way?
Tlaaxw na’mi naimuma. All
my relations.
Dancing Light.
Compliments
How welcome is a compli
ment, if truly it’s sincere.
It’s Eke an unexpected gift,
like music to your ear.
How great the value o f these
words when gloom has come
your way.
Like sunshine breaking
thro u g h the clouds, m uch
brighter is the day.
The giver of a compliment
spends Ettle for the deed, but it
can be like precious gold for ears
that have its need.
Let’s make the world a bet
ter place. Be positive each day,
and give away a compliment.
We change the world that
way.

Back at IHS
My nam e is M artiRai
Ramsey. I would Eke to take
this opportunity to let my com
munity know that I have re
turned to Indian Health Service
as Contact Representative.
I had left in March 2009 to
return to coEege pursuing a de
gree in Social Work. D ue to
unforeseen funding compEca-
tions I was unable to continue.
The good part about aU that
is, I have returned to my posi
tion at IHS! Sometimes the way
we find out where we are sup
posed to be is by the opportuni
ties that open or close... I am
most grateful and very excited
to be back at the Warm Springs
Health and WeUness Center. I
truly appreciate the warm wel
come back from the staff and
patients.
My primary duties as Con
tact Representative are to enroU
aE eEgible IHS cEents in Medi
care, Medicaid (OHP), Third
Party Insurance, Prescription
Assistance, and assist our elder
community with the Social Se
curity resources such as Medi
care Part A, B, and D, Social
Security DisabiEty and programs
for elders preparing for retire
ment.
I also have assisted patients
in connecting to resources for
food, energy assistance, and
rental assistance programs.
I am reaching out to aU par
ents who have children 18 years
and younger.
Medicaid (OHP) is stiU open
to this age group o f our com
munity. Please do not hesitate
to apply, even if you work. You
may be pleasantly surprised to
reaEze that your child quaEfies,
even if you are employed.
It is a rewarding resource to
receive OHP for your children.
This is very beneficial if your
child needs care outside of the
W arm Springs H ealth and
Wellness Center.
Also, if you are traveling or
your child needs medical atten
tion when the cEnic is closed,
O H P is an exceUent resource to
cover the cost of medical care
and prescriptions.
Please remember, if you are
currently on OHP, continue to
re-certify within the time given.
This wiU prevent you from los
ing your O H P coverage and
having to re-apply.
I f you are an adult 19-64,
who does not receive TANF
benefits and are not pregnant,
and you fail to recertify, most
likely you wiU not be eEgible to
re-enroU if your coverage is ter
minated, as the program is closed
to this population. Be sure to
contact your DHS case worker
to see if your re-certification is
due.
It is always a good idea to
partake in aE resources even if
your child is well and rarely
needs to see the doctor. It is
better to be prepared and be
covered than to find yourself
without when the need arises.
The only cost you wiE pay for
this coverage is a Ettle bit of
your time to complete a short
appEcation and provide identi
fication and income verification.
Often we are seeing patients
needing medications that the
W arm Springs H ealth and
Wellness Center Pharmacy does
not carry.
I f you have a prescription
that cEnic Pharmacy does not
carry, come and see me. I will
research the internet to see if
the company that makes the
medication has a prescription as
sistance program.
Most medications have pro
grams that wiE provide medica
tions at very low to no cost, de
pending on your income. The
appEcation process is very short.
Often, the assisting program wiE
mati the medications directly to
you or to the Pharmacy to dis
pense to you.
If you prefer to complete the
process on your own two great
resources
are
ww w.needym eds.com
or
www.google.com. E n ter the
name o f the drug and foEow
the prompts to see if a prescrip
tion assistance program is avail
able. Each individual drug has
its own assistance program so
you must apply for each drug
separately. The process may
take a Ettle bit of time but once
you are approved the benefit is
great because generaEy you get
the drug at no or very low cost
to you. Prescription costs are
steadEy rising so this is a great
option to help w ith out-of-
pocket expenses.

Fire Management offers Fourth of July safety advice
By Suzi M acy
Fire Prevention Tech
The Fourth o f July is this
Saturday. If you are planning to
buy fireworks, please purchase
only those that are legal in O r
egon.
A good rule of thumb is, if
it flies in the air it probably is
not legal here in Oregon.
According to the state Fire
Marshal’s Office, the foEowing
are legal fireworks:
Base fountains, handle foun
tains, sparklers (wood core),
cone fountains, ground bloom
flowers and wheels.
Those that are illegal are:
Roman candles, missEes, bottle
rockets, aE firecrackers, aerial
spinners, bees, heEcopters and
jumping jacks.
Ensure your fun this Fourth
of July by foEowing these safety
tips:
Never aEow chEdren to play
with matches or Eghters.
Make sure an adult is
present. Keep fireworks away
from smaE chEdren.
Keep pets indoors and se
cured in a fenced area away
from fireworks.
Only use fireworks outdoors.
Avoid dry vegetation, debris or
buEdings that may catch fire.
Never point or throw fire
works at people, animals, cars
or buEdings.
Have a hose or bucket of
water ready to extinguish a fire
or douse used fireworks.
Avoid fireworks that are leak
ing, wet or look old.
Never alter fireworks or at
tempt to make your own.
Dispose of spent fireworks
by dunking or dousing with wa
ter and putting into an outdoor
trash can away from a budd
ing.
Remember, be prepared, be
safe arid be responsible. Fire
Management and Smokey Bear
would Eke to wish everyone a
safe and enjoyable Fourth of
July-
