Robotics club studies wind power generation
B y Leslie M itts
Spilyay Tymoo
W ind power served as a
topic o f exploration for lo
cal youth involved with the
Lego Robotics Club recendy.
Students involved with the
club built windmills o ut o f
cardboard in attem pt to see
what type o f windmill is most
efficient.
Shawn M orford, o f OSU
Extension Services, said the
Tribes’ exploration o f renew
able energy sources led to the
activity for the Lego Robot
ics Club last week as they tried
to teach students about how
windmills work.
The club is conducted by
OSU Extension Services as
part o f the 4-H S.E.T. Pro
gram. S.E.T. stands for Sci
ence, Engineering, and Tech
nology.
While the club is designed
fo r stu d e n ts ages 9-14,
M orford said, they welcome
students o f any ages.'
The club has been meet
ing in conjunction with Early
Childhood Education as stu
dents from the after-school
program at E C E m et w ith
instructors from OSU Exten
sion Services.
Now, M orford said, they
plan to m eet at the Educa
tion Building in order to give
all students a chance to at
tend.
So far this year students
h av e b u ilt ro b o ts o u t o f
Legos and programmed them
to com plete specific tasks,
M orford said.
The club aims to teach sci
ence to students in a way that

(below, left to right) in a windmill building experiment at a
recent Lego Robotics Club meeting.
they might n ot get in the class
room.
“The idea is to engage kids
into getting excited about sci
ence and technology in a fun
way,” M orford explained.
“ I t m akes scien ce fu n ,”
M orford said. “They don’t re
ally know that they’re learning
science because they’re just do
ing activities.”
Because the students com.-
plete very hands-on projects, she
added, there is a lot o f trial and
error involved.
Wârm Springs Mârkri
Jake F rank, 8, is a fre
quent club participant and
even travelled to B end to
compete in the Lego Robot
ics competition.
As for w hat he’s learned,
F rank said, h e ’s definitely
learned a lot about robots.
The best part o f the com
petition, he added, was get
ting to hand out trophies to
the winners.
Though his robot didn’t do
as well in the competition as
he had hoped, Frank said he
learned a lot through the ex
perience.
“My favorite part is when
you get to program them ,”
Frank said. “T hen we just
have fun.”
Frank, M orford said, has
excelled in his participation
with the club.
“H e has been very enthu
siastic about it and very com
m itted to it,” M orford ex
plained.
Frank said he didn’t expect
to learn so much through the
L ego R o b o tic s C lub. “ I
thought it would be boring,
but it was fun,” he explained.
A ustin Schjoll, 9, w orks
alongside Frank in the Lego
R obotics C lub and agreed
that they’ve had fun building
robots. Plus, Schjoll said,
“You get to learn more new
stuff.”
Eventually the club will ex
p lo re ro c k e try as w ell,
M orford said.
The Lego Robotics Club
meets every Wednesday after
school at the Education Build
ing. For more information,
