Surprise visit from And 1 streetball team

Warm Springs sports fans
received several popular visitors
recendy.
And 1 Streetball Legends
travelled to Warm Springs to
speak with youth and play a
game against the Warm Springs
All Stars on December 6.
The And 1 Streetball Leg
ends have been featured on
ESPN and toured across the
world.
Andy Leonard said the Rec
reation Department received a
phone call from And 1 regard
ing their reservation tour.
“Out of the blue they called
us,” Leonard said. “I thought it
was a joke.”
Community members had
similar reactions, Leonard said.
As they publicized the event
Leonard heard from community
m em bers asking him if the
event was really going to take
place.
“It’s kind of crazy,” Leonard
said.
Tour coordinator Linda Hill
said the group has been touring
reservations across the country
this winter. Already they have
visited Wyoming, South Dakota,
N orth Dakota, Montana, Ne-

other parts o f Oregon.
The reservation tour began,
Hill said, because o f the reac
tion when And 1 visited the
Navajo Nation last year.
“We felt th at the Native
American community really ap
preciates the game,” Hill ex
plained.
Typically the team tours ma
jor cities and internationally.
“We travel a lot,” Hill said.

from 5:30-7 p.m. this Thurs
day, Dec. 18. The craft night
will be in the elementary
school gym.

craft materials, and the event
will be free to the Warm
Springs community. Assis
tance will be provided to
with bigger jumps and move
ments, Hill said. “They kind of
have a unique talent,” Hill ex
plained.
She described the streetball
team as “like the NBA, but
flashier.”
During their reservation tour,
Hill said, thè team has been
speaking to youth about the
importance o f education as well
as the need to stay away from
negative influence like alcohol,
drugs or gangs.
“We’re out here first and
foremost to talk about the im
portance o f education,” Hill
said.
“It’s for the kids,” Hill ex
plained. “We just make sure to
focus on the youth.”
In the end, Hill said, they
make sure emphasize the posi
tive things in life for the youth.
“It’s not all about basketball,
it’s what your talent is,” Hill said.
And 1 Streetball Legends will
continue to tour reservations
across the United States until the
end of January.

building lobby, parents are help
ing to keep the Latchkey pro
gram going.
Children o f workingparents
attend Latchkey activities after
school, during vacations and
during the summer months. The
program was threatened with
elimination this year because of
budget cuts. It was written back -
into the budget after parents
guaranteed their support o f the
