T o th e a u th o r o f th e u n

around the Warm Springs com

I know w ho you are, let me
rem ind you th at I was one o f
the three Tribal Council mem
bers that support the petition
ers in 1999.1 never agreed with
all the 11 points o f the petition.
M ost im portandy I supported
your rights and others as spelled
out in the Constitution.
As for the relationship with
m e and my supervisor, we both
carry out our respective respon
sibilities to th e tribes and its
m em bership in a professional
manner.
I rarely go into Tribal Coun
cil chambers o r talk with Tribal
Council members and if I do it
will be in Tribal Council cham

Three of the boxers on this 1960s era boxing team are from Warm Springs. Can you
identify them? The team was on its way to a Golden Gloves event at the time of the
picture.
A small committee of residents is studying the idea of creating a Warm Springs Hall of
Fame. Pictures from the past, such as this one above, will help in creating a catalog of
pictures that may be included in the Hall of Fame, said Gerald Smith, chief operations
officer of the tribes, and a long-time boxing advocate and trainer.
D ear People o f Warm Springs,
I am w riting to you all to
share w hat I have learned from
w here I am at. Before I start
this, I w ant to apologize to those
on the reservation that I have
done w rong to. The disrespect
on the rez that I have done fills
me with shame, guilt, all o f this
due to my drug and alcohol use.
I am in prison right now because
o f my use. I am h ere at th e
D eer Ridge Correctional Insti
tute, am in the Intensive Resi
dential Treatment program. The
main focus o f this program is
to be accountable for every
thing I do and see. By n o t doing
this, guilt and shame grew on
me, making me the person I was.
(Running away.) It shames m e
strongly due to the fact that I ’d
do som ething w rong, then go
out to society as if I ’m innocent.
I have lacked empathy for oth
ers by doing this.
I f I p ut myself in their shoes,
I ’d be really m ad at me. This I
will fix when I get out. The first
thing that’s im portant to me is
to put sobriety as my main pri
ority. I understand that that first
drink or hit will just bring me
down to that same disrespect
ful person.
So I ’m going to do all that I
can to keep from a dow nfall
position. My strongest motiva
tional aspect is my children’s
future. T he m ain thing I feel
im portant for a child is to be
loved by their parents. My past
has am ounted to nothing. I will
admit that I am not anything but
a kid until the day that my kids
and others can respect me for
the things I do.
I have had my childhood, and
chose to make poor choices that
put me where I am today. N ow
I can choose to do what is right
so my children can see and learn
from my example. Also, those I
have drank and used with can
see too. My goal is to become a
re s p e c te d c itiz e n o f W arm
Springs, become an asset (posi
tively) to those w ho also w ant
to change their lives for the bet
ter. I w ant to tell you all that my
h eart hu rts from the w rongs
I ’ve done.
I have hit that point where
I ’m tired o f doing th e sam e
thing over and over. I believe
that all kids are the future and
from examples I can make, our
co m m u n ity can b e c o m e a
healthier and happier place.
I f a drunk like m e can do it,
anyone can. I know I’m n o t out
yet, but the trick I will use is to
take each step I take cautiously
(always aware).
I write this to the community
as a whole in the deepest o f re
spect.
To those I have affected be
cause o f my disrespect, I am
greatly ashamed. My plan is to
do w hat is right, to make things
right. I love my family and com
munity, and will offer the good
(positive) side o f m e to make
things better.
Sincerely and respectfully,
Otis Johnson, no. 10105088,
D RCI, 3920 E. A shwood Rd.,
Madras, O R 97741.
