dents received instruction about
how to live healthier lifestyles.

Francis spoke to past and cur
ren t participants at the event,
and said the program continues
to im prove as m ore and m ore
people participate.
“It’s for you guys,” he said.
“The more you keep coming, the
better it gets.”

o f the highest rates o f diabetes
in the w orld and there isn’t a
known reason why.
According to Francis, “We’re
trying to help the Native Ameri
can community to try to change
that— we do that through exer
cise and nutrition.”
Francis was one o f the first
participants in the program and
later becam e a lifestyle coach
after changing his habits. The
changes a re n ’t really a diet,

change.”

were the problem.

change his lifestyle for the bet
ter.
H e spoke o f the need to find
balance between mental, emo
tio n al, physical an d spiritual
health.
“We need to m aintain bal
ance,” Courtney said.
H e encouraged the graduates
to take th e in fo rm atio n they
learned and maximize it to lead
healthy lifestyles.
The Diabetes Prevention Pro
gram is a three-year program
based on a grant that the Dia
b e te s P ro g ra m , C o m m u n ity

and
C o m m u n ity
Wellness received.
D uring the three years, par
ticipants attend a four-m onth
class and continue to m eet with
a coach and receive help during
the rest o f the time period.
Participants aim to lose seven
percent o f their starting weight
as well as learn to eat healthier
and make better choices.
Exercise is also key— the Dia
b etes P ro g ra m has ex ercise
equipm ent available to partici
pants and hosts monthly diabe
tes prevention walks in addition
to activities like a walking club.

Biggs Bridge closure scheduled

single-lane closures controlled by
flaggers at the Biggs Bridge be
ginning M onday, A ugust 18.
The closure will be from 10 p.m.
to 6 a.m ., and will co n tin u e
through the end o f August.
Up to 20 minute delays can
be expected during those night
time closures. Full closure o f the
bridge will begin on Wednesday,
Septem ber 3, after the L abor
Day Weekend, and the bridge
will remain closed to all traffic
(24 hours a day, seven days a
week) until D ecem ber 30.
