Strengthening Family Camp at Peters Pasture
Families also learned about
each o f the three tribal lan
guages during sessions with staff
from the Language Program—
d u rin g 30-minute sessions fami
lies learned things like basic
greetings and how to introduce
themselves in all o f the tribal
languages.
Beading, basket making, ani
m al pelts, drum m aking and
various o th er traditional arts
served as the focus for other
family sessions.
The Diabetes Team offered
an educational session as well as
the Shadow Project.
T he families w ere encour
aged throughout the camp to
take time to visit with elders who
also attended and learn m ore
about traditions and their lives.
Y outh w orkers from OSU
Extension had the opportunity
to assume a leadership position
and host several ice breaker ac
tiv itie s a t th e b e g in n in g o f
camp.
For example, on the first day
o f cam p those in attendance
listed things about themselves
like their favorite color, sport,
food and hobby.
Each camp participant then
used the list to introduce them
selves to their fellow campers.
T h e cam p also fe a tu re d
plenty o f free time for families
to work on projects or do arts
and crafts and spend time to
gether.
Plus, there were also tee-p'ee
pole races that could be called
at any time.
The family camp ends today,
A ugust 14, after several fun-
filled days at Peters Pasture.

This year at the annual tribal
culture camp at Peters Pasture,
the focus is on more than just
culture.
Fam ilies w orked to com e
closer together, as well as learn
about their culture, as they spent
time in the outdoors.
This year marked a few sig
nificant changes at the camp.
While in the past the camp
had been only for local youth,
this year the Culture and Heri
tage D epartm ent and OSU Ex
tension worked together to cre
ate a camp for all members o f
a family.
As Shawn Morford, director
o f OSU E xtension, told the
families at the camp, “It’s about
bringing families together.”
The two organizations com
bined resources to create sev
eral days o f cultural activities
and classes for the families that
traveled to the camp.
A t the beginning o f camp
five teepees w ere filled w ith
families.
A bout 30 people attended
along with ten staff m embers
from OSU Extension and Cul
ture and Heritage.
During the first day o f camp,
families worked together to cre
ate a family shield th at they
posted in front o f their tent or
teepee.
The families gathered mate
rials and used art supplies for
their family shields, which rep
resented who they are and as
pects o f their family.

At the beginning of camp, families worked together to create a family shield to post outside of their teepee or tent. This year
the focus of the culture camp was strengthening the bond between family members.
