Museum displays Spirit of the Horse
H orses have been a part o f
Plateau Indian life for centuries.
T h e h o rs e w as th e m ain
means o f travel for many years.
People relied on them for their
daily existence, until the arrival
o f the m otor vehicle.
Today, horses appear in pa­
rades, a testam ent to their liv­
ing heritage.

Springs currently featuring a
tribute to this animal - Spirit o f
the H orse — in the Change Ex­
hibits gallery.
The exhibit includes examples
o f beaded horse regalia, and
beaded items paying homage to
the horse.
The exhibit features histori­
cal photographs o f the horses,
as they w ere used during the
early days o f the reservation,
an d cu rre n t-d a y p ictu res o f
horses and the people w ho still
greatly value the animal.
The exhibit includes testimo­
nials to the horse.
“All horses have d ifferen t
personalities, just like people,”
says Warm Springs C hief Delvis
Heath.
“You need to ride them and
find out w hat type o f horse it is
- if it’s scared or gende.”

Springs Living Traditions will
present live dem onstrations
by tribal m em ber from 12
noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday,
July 19, and Sunday, July 27.
T he July 19 Living Tradi­
tion presentation will be Ce-
dar Root Weaving, presented
by A ntoinette Q ueahpam a-
Pamperien.
The July 27 presentation
will be Bead Tapestry, pre­
sented by G inger Smith.

Horse regalia class at museum

Springs in A ugust will present
part two o f the H orse Regalia
Class.
The class, focusing on Mak­
ing H orse Trappings, will be pre­
sented by bead artisans Chris
Scott and Sandra Scott-McGill.
The classes will be from 5-8
