I realize that people are in the
business to make money, b u t it’s
being done at the expense o f our
people. There are so many dif

make this a true statement. You
already know w hat you are. I f
you don’t — you don’t care for
your family members.
W hen we go to the clinic, we
see posters addressing domestic
violence and phone numbers to

victim refuses assistance just to
protect the offender? The tribal
court should enforce the law to
its limit. N one o f us need to live
in fear. W here o r w hen does it
end? I wish I had all the answers.

Our community
O ur people in Warm Springs
are living in turmoil. This car
ries on 24/7.
Many o f us have accepted
the fact that we are alcoholics.
It’s a shame we don’t w ant to
admit it in the first place, but
we have to start someplace and
time. Each family can tell their
own story about how alcohol or
substances have affected their
lives.

Myths and facts about diabetes
By Elsie Howard
Q u e stio n : D o h o u se h o ld
chores count as exercise?
Answer: Yes and no.
Have you ever raced around
the house to get the dusting and
vacuuming done before guests
arrive, and then found you’re
o u t o f energy? Have you n o
ticed your blood glucose level
gets low whenever you m ow the
lawn?
T he U.S. Surgeon G eneral
suggests 30 minutes o f m oder
ate physical activity at least five
days per week. M oderate inten
sity is anything that raises your
heart rate.
Thirty minutes sounds like a
lot, but you don’t have to do it
all at once. You can reach the
30 m inutes by exercising three
different times o f ten m inutes
o f exercise (or tw o 15 m in
utes).
I f you chores increase your
heart rate for ten m inutes or
more, you can count it toward
your exercise goal.
M ow ing your law n w ith a
push mower, moving furniture
w hen you vacuum , chopping
w ood and washing the floor on
your hands and knees are all
good examples o f m oderate in
tensity exercise.
Light dusting, washing dishes,
and ironing are considered to be
lig h t in ten sity activities and
w ould n o t count tow ard your
daily activity minutes.
