at Lewis & Clark College in Port­
land. She is working toward her
Master o f Arts in Teaching.
Mitchell said she hopes to
return to the Warm Springs area
to work when she graduates.
Olin Charley will be attend­
ing the Oregon Culinary Insti­
tute at Pioneer Pacific College.

The scholarship, he said, will
help open doors to a better life
for his family and himself.

scholarship representative, said
it was difficult to choose from
among the many good appli­
cants for the two scholarships.
There were 18 women who
applied, and five men. The cri­
teria to judge the recipients in­
cluded their grade point average,
and their personal statem ent
submitted with the application.
“I have had this passion for
cooking since I was a little boy,”
Charley wrote in his statement.
“ My mother taught us bqys in
the family that it is essential to
learn now to cook in the world
that we live in today.” ..
In her statem ent, Natalie
Mitchell said,' ‘^Working with
children has always been myC
passion, and I want to be- able
to advance my learning so that
the children I teach will do the
same. I would like to teach stu­
dents who are underprivileged
because they deserve a quality
education and an.opportunity to
succeed.”^
Kah-Nee-Ta wishes to con­
gratulate Olin* Charley and
Natalie Mitchell on their schol­
arship awards.

The Oregon Department o f
Corrections and the sta ff o f
Deer Ridge Correctional Insti­
tution in Madras have issued an
invitation to the public to tour
the new prison’s 644-bed men’s
minimum security facility, on
Thursday and Friday, August
23-24. Tfie facility will be open
'to' the public from 1 tp 7 p.m.
on both days;
“Inmates are arriving in Sep-
terriber, so this will be the only
opportunity for the public to
tour the minimum facility,” said
Parrish Van Wert, Deer Ridge
community development coor­
dinator.
“ Reaching this m ilesto n e1
marks nearly 11 years o f plan­
ning and $27 million in construc­
tion costs, mostly over the past

two years,” said Van Wert. “The
construction team with the D e­
partment o f Corrections and
Kirby Nagelhout Construction
o f Bend completed the facility
