Please ensure that recreational
dams do not block fish passage
Swimmers hoping to find
a way to escape summer heat
should keep one thing in
mind: migrating fish.
R ecreational dams that
swimmers build can often
hinder the upstream migra
tion o f fish
While some barriers can
make it difficult for fish to
pass by, the problem can be
easily solved.
lis a Hewlett, a fish biolo
gist with Natural Resources,
suggests that a two-foot gap
be left in dams, particularly
in the deep portions o f the
main channel.
I f anyone has questions or
co n ce rn s ab o u t leaving
enough room in the recre
ation dam or about potential
salm on spawning habitat,
people are encouraged to call
Hewlett at 553-2029.
