In December of 2006 four
registered nurses, Bonny Weed,
Denise Swift, Katie Russell and
Jodi Fickett, received specialized
training in performing routine
pap and breast exams.
Mary Alice Trapp, R.N., pro
gram director o f the Breast and
Cervix Cancer Screening Pro
gram sponsored by the Mayo
Clinic Cancer Center of Roch
ester, Minn., eàme to Warm
Springs and gave a week-long
training session on women’s
health screening.
T he idea for a w om en’s
health clinic was fueled by the
need to increase1 services to
women in. Warm Spririgs. By
increasing the number of female
providers and having the clinic
at an alternate sitp other than
the Medical Clinic, there are
more opportunities for women’s
health issues to be addressed;
Women can call for appoint
ments and not have to wait for
long periods of time to be seen.
The Well Women’s Clinic
hopes to improve the health of
the women of Warm Springs by
providing quality care in a com
fortable atmosphere and in a

The Diabetes Prevention Pro
gram honored graduates with a
dinner and presentation of jack
ets to past participants recently.
Alex McMillan attended the
ceremony as a guest speaker.
A fitness columnist for The
Oregonian as well as a motiva
tional speaker, McMillan
adopted a healthy lifestyle after
finding himself 50 pounds over
weight
He spoke o f the differences
in activity levels in just the past
few decades.
“A typical day for m ost
people, just from 30 years ago,
is a lot different than it is to
day,” McMillan said. For that
reason, he encouraged-people to
make up the difference through
exercise.
It’s something that extends
into food choices, he said. “Just
make the choice consciously—
if I’m going to eat it, I’m going
to burn it,” he said.
In addition, McMillan said,
it’s im portant to identify the
motivation for losing weight.
“If there’s no desire, there’s
no way you’re going to do it,” '
McMillan said.
