Great season for Runnin* Rebels

The Runnin’ Rebels youth
basketball squad finished their
season with a near perfect record
of 24-1.
Most recently the team trav
eled to the Red Mountain War
riors youth hoops tourney in
M cD erm ott, Nev., and took
first place.
A big part of the Runnin’
Rebels’ success is that the nine
players have stayed together for
some time as a team, said coach
Vernon Squiemphen.
The players, he said, haven’t
switched teams during the sea
son and off-season, so they’ve
had a chance to play together
and develop as a team.
As with other youth basket
ball teams, family plays a big part
in bringing success and victory
to the team.
Family members help with
the fundraising — burrito and
Indian taco sales — needed to
travel to the tournaments and
purchase the uniforms.
Squiemphen began coaching
the Runnin’ Rebels last year. At
the time, his grandson Lennox
Picard was playing basketball at
the Community Center on a
regular basis.

Squiemphen decided to help
organize a team. Carlos Calica
joined as assistant coach.
Soon the team had eight regu
lar players, and now nine play
ers. The team includes six boys
and five girls.
The players are P icard,
Lyndreth LeClaire, Gavin Begay,
Quinden Calica, Trenton Calica,
Kanin Smith III, Lana Shike,
Leah Suppah, Adena McGill,
Vivian Yazzie and Shoshona
Garcia.
Team sponsors are Warm
Springs Power Enterpirses, Kah-
Nee-Ta, JR Smith Logging Com
pany, and Daisy Ike.
LaDonna Squiemphen and
Marcy Picard coordinate the
team’s fundraising events. Jersey
sponsors are Terry and Gladys
Squiemphen, and LaDonna and
Marcy.
The team wishes to say thank-
you to all those in the commu
nity who purchased burritos
during the recent fundraising
sale.
The funds were used to travel
to the Red Mountain Warriors
tournam ent at M cD erm ott,
where Lennox Picard was cho
sen as the tournam ent Most
Valuable Player.
He received the MVP award
not only for his play on the court
but also for his help in taking
care of the team off the court
during the w eekend in
M cDermott. He also helped
with the fundraising leading up
to the trip.
All-Stars at the tournament
were Quinden Calica, Kanim
Smith III, Lyndreth LeClaire
and Leah Suppah. Gavin Begay
took home the Defensive De
mon award.
The Runnin’ Rebels have re
cently been asked to be the host
team for the tournament at the
Warm Springs Community Cen
ter during Mother’s Day Week
end in May.

Root Feast Rodeo this weekend
The Root Feast Jackpot Rodeo Family Fun
Day will be Saturday, April 28 starting at noon
at the Warm Springs Rodeo Arena.
Adult events include the wild horse race,
wild ride with saddle, barrel racing. Youth
events are the rescue race, the wild colt race,
calf riding, and mutton busting.
Fun events for free are the women’s boot
race, the calf scramble, and the stick horse
race.
Entry dates are April 16-18 from 6 to 8
p.m. only. Entry phone number is 553-1208.
Walk in entry day of rodeo from 9 to 11
a.m. only. All entries must be paid by 11 a.m.
on April 28, no exceptions.
Admission is $3, under 3 years free.
