Last Saturday night was a
special occasion for the Mu
seum at Warm Springs, as it cel
ebrated the Fifth Annual Honor
Dinner.
Over 200 people gathered in
the Downtown Portland Hilton
H otel to honor this y e ar’s
Twanat Award Winner, W. Rich
ard West Jr., the founding direc
tor of the Smithsonian National
Museum of the American In
dian in Washington D.C.
West is a citizen of the Chey
enne and Arapaho Tribes of
Oklahoma and is a Peace Chief
of the Southern Cheyenne.
In presentin g the award,
Kah-Nee-Ta and Ventures board
chairman Ken Smith cited the
work West did to create the
Smithsonian National Museum,
of the American Indian, bring
ing it from a concept through
to opening through diligent
fundraising, planning and work
ing with Congress.
In accepting the award West,
who was introduced by Leroy
Wilder, cited the 20 plus year
relationship he has had with lead
ers from Warm Spring, refer
ring to stories about leaders of
the tribes, past and present.

friend and a leader who worked
tirelessly for the tribes and their
culture.
Accepting the award for the
Clements and Frank families
was Rudy’s widow Anna. In her
acceptance remarks Anna noted
Atwai Rudy’s love of the people
and culture of Warm Springs
and his life long efforts to pro
mote the culture and provide
opportunities for the people of
the reservation.

knowledge of the tribal consti
tution and laws and recognizing
his work in protecting fishing
fights and tribal sovereignty.

For the fundraising
event this year, over
200 people gathered
at the Downtown
Portland Hilton
Hotel.
Lifetime Achievement Award to
the Chief, commenting that he
has served for 48 years as Chief,
and has provided leadership and
played an important role in es
tablishing the Museum at Warm
Springs.
Kirk thanked the Chief for
his strong and consistent lead
ership, calling him one of the
greatest leaders in the tribes’ his
tory.
The dinner and silent auction
were a fundraising event for the

Museum, featuring tribal art
music and crafts. Fifteen spon
sors contributed to the financial
success o f the evening and
showed support for the event.
Representatives of the Umatilla,
Siletz and Grand Ronde tribes
were present as well as over 20
Cascade Locks leaders and citi
zens who attended to show their
support for Warm Springs and
the museum.
