Joanna Williams, Isac Zacarias and Nicholas Katchia recently traveled to Salem where
they presented to state representatives and the Governor’s Council. The members of
the Madras High School Youth Development Team were also recognized on the house
floor for their work on the film “Silent Message.”

The Jefferson County Fair is a few months
away, but it is already time to start preparing en
tries.
It is also time for people to start considering
other ways to participate.
This year the Jefferson County Fair will take
place during the week of July 24.
Brigette Whipple is serving as the superinten
dent for the Native American department for the
third year in a row, and said it is the ideal time for
people to start preparing their entries.
“There’s a whole bunch of neat things people
can enter,” Whipple said. While they do have quite
a few entries, Whipple said there is always room
for more.
“We have a pretty good turnout,” Whipple said.
“We could have a better turnout, I think.”
Over the past few years, participation of tribal
members in the fair hasn’t been as strong, Whipple
said.
“It’s kind of dwindled,” she explained. “It’s
really minimal right now.”
According to Whipple, “Participation with the
tribes in the parade is almost non-existent any
more. I hope people want to participate this
year.”
But there are some community members who
participate frequently— “Lucinda Green usually
sets up her frybread stand and teepee, which is
nice,” Whipple said.

Participation in the county event is something
that Whipple views as important.
In her opinion, “It’ll show the community or
the county that there are still Natives practicing
their culture, and they’re proud of it.”
In addition, she said, children will be more
encouraged to practice their native crafts.
As someone who has been entering items into
the fair since a very young age, Whipple has years
of experience.
“You get to see what other people are working
on,” Whipple added.
If that isn’t enough motivation, Whipple said,
“It’s a lot of fun.”
If someone wishes to enter an item into the
fair but is unable to travel to Madras, Whipple
said, they can drop off their items at the Wild
Rye Bread Gallery where they will be trans
ported.
Whipple also encourages tribal members to
volunteer to sit at the Native American booth to
speak with community members and those at
tending the fair.
Volunteers will sit at the informational booth
from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. for two-hour shifts.
Plus, Whipple said, if there is any interest in
including more teepees or providing dancing as
entertainment, she encourages people to call
her.
Anyone with questions may call Whipple at 553-
1216.
