E Coosh EEWA: The way it is
Good and bad
of school
reclassification
B y Sid M iller
Publisher Emeritus
The reclassification of all the
schools in the state has had its
good and bad points, in particu
lar the shake up in the Inter-
Mountain Conference, where
the changes of all
schools to class 6-A,
5-A, 4-A, etc.
The IMC now
consists of the Mt.
View Cougars, the Bend Lava
Bears, Summit Storm, Crook
C ounty
C ow boys,
The
P en d leto n B uckaro os, the
H erm iston B ulldogs, The
Dalles-Watonka and the Madras
White Buffalos.
In athletics, football will cre
ate a lot of problems mainly in
the student enrollment area. It
was visible during the past foot
ball season. This does not nec
essarily pertain to the IMC “In
ter-Mountain Conference,” but
to all other 5-A leagues in the
state. After some schools took
their bumps and bruises they
elected to join independent
leagues to be compatible with
other schools in the same situa
tion. This would create a way
for schools of similar si 2 es to
be able to compete and perhaps
win more games. The towns
people like to see their home
team do well. To see their kids
do well in sports is the good
point of the independent league.
Now the bad point of the
independent league is: any ath
lete who participates in the in
dependent league will not be eli
gible for state recognition for his
ability of participation. He will
not be recognized as an outstand
ing running back, an outstand
ing defensive player, and will not
be eligible to participate in any
state play such as all-stars no
matter how good the athlete is.
It is quite certain the Madras
White Buffalos have elected to
join an independent football
league which is a wrong move
in many respects. They should
have stayed in the IMC, and
took their lumps and bruises
because who knows what holds
in the future. It may take a few
years before they would do well
or who knows, it may be a year.
This would give a good athlete
a chance to receive the honors
that are due to him in state rec
ognition. Who knows, the inde
pendent league may cause good
athletes to transfer out of the
region and play at other schools.
As it is the Madras White
Buffalos have the ability to par
ticipate in all other sports in the
IMC.
Several years ago M adras
was a small school and just had
enough boys to field a football
team but they took their pound
ing from the Redmond Panthers
and the Crook County Cowboys
with lopsided scores but that was
just all in the game. These are
just comments about the sports
participation of the school with
no remorse feelings one way or
the other... just something to
think about.
(Come forward
To whom it may concern:
On the early morning of Feb
ruary 7 someone or some people
stole my 1981 Dodge Arrow
from my carport between the
hours of 12:30 a.m. and 1:30
a.m. We reported it to the po
lice as stolen. Now on or about
6:30 a.m. the police found my
little truck on the side of the
road and it was vandalized. All
of the windows were broken
out and tires slashes.
Whoever did this, come for
ward and take responsibility for
what you did. A lot of people
know me on this res, and at least
they respect me enough to help
in this matter of catching the
people responsible for this ac
tion. Stealing from a family man
is the lowest people can go, es
pecially when it was my work
tmck and I have a family to feed.
This is no threat or promise, it
is a fact. What goes around
comes around. “Behold the pale
horse, and the man who sat on
him was death, and hell followed
with him.” You have just awak
ened the volcano, dude.
Sincerely, Woodrow Picard
Sr.
A thank you
Family and friends,
As many of you know my
brother Racin “Jason” Johnson
was shot on February third at
about midnight. First I, on be
half of my family, would like
to thank the people who were
there, for their swift actions. You
did save his life. I understand
you may or have suffered the
repercussions of the evil that has
touched my family. D espite
what has happened I appreciate
the love that is still here. Your
actions prove to us there is still
love in our homes. EMT’s, Vic
tims of Crime, thank you for
your actions. Also, you may say
you were doing your job, yet you
could do it elsewhere for more
money. Thank you for caring

Obesity battle Not in favor
Obesity, with the associated
health problems of diabetes,
heart disease and stroke, is a
huge problem for the residents
of Jefferson County. With obe
sity, diabetes and heart disease
rates significantly higher that the
state of Oregon average, and the
potential for earlier onset of
problems in our kids, we must
learn to live our lives differently.
Two health challenge programs
are about to begin for residents
of Jefferson County, as a way
to jump-start healthier living in
this new year.
Warm Springs residents have
access to the well-established
“B ig g est L oser in W arm
S p rin gs” con test, run by
Carolyn Harvey, the Commu

(CHET), Indian Health Service
Nutrition Program, and the Dia

Through education and mo

has been improving the health
of Warm Springs residents for
three years now, and they are
always encouraging as many
participants as possible. Why not
call Carolyn Harvey today at
553-1196 ext. 4166 and get
signed up for improved health
