Crackling fires, toasted
marshmallows, Washut songs,
drumming, dancing and learn
ing: all of these and more em
braced the campers, staff and
guests of the 4-H Culture En
richment Camp at Peter’s Pas
ture these past few weeks.
For years OSU Extension’s 4-
H Program has held a residen
tial camp at Peter’s Pasture for
the youth of Warm Springs,
providing opportunities for
growth in the following areas:
To create awareness of the
traditions and cultures of the
three tribes of the Confeder
ated Tribes of Warm Springs;
To build independence, con
fidence, competence and knowl
edge;
To provide a safe and en
riching camp experience within
a natural wilderness setting.
The focus is to provide a
positive hands-on learning expe
rience for youth.
The goal of the 4-H program
is to encourage positive youth
development through life skill
and leadership development,
helping youth to reach their full

potential and become contrib
uting members of society.
This year, day camp for the
Boys and Girls Club Education
were provided.
Wednesday Family Night was
a huge success with 25 family
members and guests. The camp
ers performed skits, songs and
dances for the audience during
the evening campfire. Flute
music, drumming, songs and
stories were shared.
The schedule of educational
lessons provided a wide array of
hands-on learning for the camp-
ers each day. Some of those
classes included: basket making,
drumming and singing, beading,
jam making, making wool, silk
screening the camp t-shirts with
designs of petroglyphs from the
Columbia River, and lots of hik
ing around the area of Peter’s
Pasture. The campers also trav
eled to Trout Lake to pick huck
leberries and swim in the lake.

from the Diabetes Team and
the Community Health Educa
tion Team (CHET) also pro
vided healthy informational
classes to the campers.
Through group living, the
campers learned to work out
difficulties on their own. And
through resolving any difficul
ties that might arise, the camp
ers gained self-esteem and lead
ership skills.
The campers were given the
opportunity to participate in
daily sweats, afternoon swim
ming and hikes, campfire activi
ties, kitchen preparation and
community living. It was a great
year at camp and a big “thank
you” goes out to the campers,
parents, community, camp staff
and volunteers for making it all
happen for our youth,
