Dentists warn against soda consumption
Eight hundred and sixty
seven cans of soda pop is a
lot of soda by any measure.
The employees of the den
tal clinic of the Warm Springs
Health and Wellness Center
have collected a mountain of
pop cans and bottles to illus
trate how much soda the av
erage teenager in the U.S.
drinks on a yearly basis.
It would take over fifteen
five-pound bags of sugar to
represent all the sugar in 867
cans of pop.
Dr. Jeff Carolla, Chief of
Dental Services at the Warm
Springs Health and Wellness
Center says, “If sugared soda
pop is a regular part of your
daily diet, you could be well on
your way to having multiple
medical and dental problems.”
These “extra calories” from
soda pop have been implicated
in causing everything from
more tooth decay to increased
rates of diabetes and obesity.
The habit of drinking two or
more cans of pop daily as a
regular part of the diet adds
“only” three or four hundred
calories per day to the diet.
However, over a year this adds
up to well over 130,000 extra
calories from processed sugars.
In a time when up to a third
of all Americans are at a risk
for diabetes, it is important to
examine our habits and what we
are teaching the generations. to
come.
Excess soda pop use has been
linked to osteoporosis in
women. The excess calories,
often leading to obesity, can then
lead to high blood pressure, early
joint failures, and a host of other
medical and dental problems.
Alternatives to soda pop can
include bottled water, milk, un
sweetened teas or coffee, or diet
sodas. Juices, various “drinks”
and sports drinks can be “soda
pop” in disguise providing all the
calories, sometimes with no ad
ditional benefits.
