This weekend marks the Thirty-Seventh
A.nnualPi-Ume-Sha Treaty Days Celebration.
Traditionally, the powwow one of the biggest
in the Northwest happens on the last weekend
in June: this year the dates are this Friday
through Sunday, June 23-25.
The powwow is a celebration of tribal
sovereignty, as the end of June was the time of
year when the tribes of the Columbia agreed to
the Treaty of 1855, establishing the Warm
Springs Preservation.
Pi-Ume-Sha also honors veterans. The first
Pi-Ume-Sha Powwow happened in 1969,
during the Vietnam War, when many tribal
members were serving tours of duty. The
powwow in recent years has been a time to
express appreciation to the tribal members
today who are serving in the armedforces during
a time of war.
