Fasthorse, who used his big body as a force inside, scored 24 in the championship game, while guard A.J. Follette had 16, as the Warriors took the lead in the first half and held Chiloquin at bay. The Yakama Players won the girls side o f the tournament, beating the Lady Springers from Warm Springs, 55-49. Andi Blodgett scored 16 points for Yakama in the title game. In the boys game, Northwest used a 2-3 zone defense exclusively to help shut down Chiloquin’s inside game led by all-tournament selection Jer emy Yazzie and Shane Weiser. The Warriors also effectively pushed the ball in transition up to quick guards like Follette, who often was at the receiving end o f long baseball passes from Fasthorse or Jeremy Arnoux. The Warriors trailed, 9-4, early in the game but scored seven in a row to take a 13-9 lead and never trailed again. Chiloquin continued to tag along, trailing by three to five points before the Warriors got a three-pointer from former Ma dras High standout Marcus Zacarias and a layup by Follette, scoring on a give-and-go with Fasthorse with less than a. second in the half and led, 39-31, at the half. Chiloquin would climb back and trail by three, 53-50, with just under 11 minutes left, but North west went on a 13-3 run to make it a 66-53 with under six minutes left. This run would be deci sive, as Chiloquin only got as close as 12 points down. Zacarias finished with 13 for the Warriors, while Galen Northrup, who played at Chemawa, scored 12, including 10 in the first half. Weiser scored 20 points to lead Chiloquin, while Yazzie had 19 and Evan Gallagher 12. Brianna Stacona, who led Madras High in scor ing a second-straight season, scored 14 points in the first half for the Lady Springer as part o f an 18-point effort, while Shonie Shimmel scored 20, including four three-pointers. Alexis Allen, who scored nine points in the championship game for Yakama, was the girls tournament MVP. Shirelle Adams from the Lady Springers, who plays with Stacona at Madras High, was named Miss Hustie, and Shimmel received an award for hitting the most three-pointers in the tournament. Northrup received the award for most three- pointers in the boys tournament. All coaches received T-shirts for their dedica tion, commitment and leadership to the youth.
