Pro lacrosse player visits center
Fourth-year player
talks about game’s
roots in America
Talk to Tom Montour for
just a few minutes and you real
ize he loves the game o f la
crosse.
“Eve been playing since I
was 5,” he said while visiting re
cently at the Warm Springs Com
munity Center.
Montour, now 23, has been
living his dream these past few
years, playing lacrosse profes
sionally.
M ontour has played for
teams in Toronto, Canada, and
Buffalo, N.Y.. Now he is the
forward for the Portland
Lumberjax of the National La
crosse League (NLL).
Montour is a Mohawk In
dian o f the Six N ations or
Iroquois. At the center of the
reservation where he grew up
is a lacrosse field, showing the
importance of the sport to his
tribe, he said.
In his mid-teens Montour
became an ironworker, but con
tinued playing lacrosse as much
as possible. At age 19 the
Toronto Rock Lacrosse team
drafted him.

The Lumberjax are having a
great season. They are bound for
the NLL playoffs, which is sur
prising for a team that is just a
year old.
Montour, a forward, has
played in nine of the team’s 13
games, with four goals and 10
assists.
Lacrosse is the oldest team
sport in North America.
While in Warm Springs,
Montour showed a video on the
sport called, “The Creator’s
Game.”

Mini marathon at Kah-Nee-Ta
The Warm Springs Recre
ation Department is hosting
the 2006 Kah-Nee-Ta Mini
Marathon on Sunday, April
30.
Runners will gather at the
Kah-Nee-Ta Village entrance.
Registration is at 8 a.m. at the
Village front gate.
The 14.5 mile run will
leave at 8:30 a.m. sharp. The
mini marathon run will start
at Simnasho at 9 a.m.
The 10K, 3 mile and one-
mile fun run will start at 10
a.m.
The Grade School Chal
lenge will recognize the class-
rooms that has the most par
ticipants and best overall
grade.
There will be awards for
the top three finishers in each
division.
Each participant will re
ceive a raffle ticket and a
pass to the Village pool (valid
day of race only).
Registration prices: Pre
registration (before April 28)
is $12 which includes t-shirt;
day of race registration is $20
with t-shirt.
