Did any of you get over to
the longhouse to view the pic
tures of the proposed casino at
the gorge? I happened to make
it and was impressed by the pic
tures and how large
this casino will be.
My daughter
Leanna said it’s go
ing to be huge. And
I have to agree with her on that,
because it will be big once it’s
built. It will have three levels and
will include a hotel for overnight
guests.
These pictures of the design
showed me a lot about the con
struction that I only pictured in
my mind for a long time.
Now I wish I knew what the
environment of the proposed
construction site looked like. I
have never been out there to see
it.
I hear things about it. Well,
we all do because there is always
conversation about the casino.
There are still positive and nega
tive tilings said about it not only
outside the reservation but here
as well.
Most of the negative I hear
locally is the time frame it’s tak
ing to get it done.
I read about it in the Oregon
newspapers that have websites.
There is still opposition, and,
well, it seems there will always
be opposition. Whether it is
from politicians, the no-casino
group, and of course Grand
Ronde tribe.

Addiction
How many times have I
wished that I could overcome
the addiction or compulsions that
keep me in bondage? I know
what it is like to struggle with
the effects of addiction and the
craziness it brings to my life. I
wonder if there is any way out
of the insanity of my current
circumstances, deep down inside
my heart there is a sense of bro
kenness that is a constant re
minder. I try to stuff it down
and ignore it. I try to drown it
by giving it to my addiction but
sorrow doesn’t go away. Loneli
ness and isolation go along with
the shame and guilt I feel.
I am so confused and so
overwhelmed by the pain in my
life that sometimes I wish I could
just die. I feel down on myself
and continually compare myself
with good people. When I was
feeding on my addiction it was
easy to become consumed by
my own needs, nothing else
mattered except for what I
craved for so desperately. I lied,
cheated and stole but that didn’t
stop me. With my family and
community I became known as
a “taker” trampling ,ovef feelings
and needs of others. I used
those as an excuse for my be
havior.
I feel love just doesn’t seem
to work for me.
The guilt, hurt, self-hatred
and my fear make me unable
to believe in love that others
have for me. I know what it is

Happy birthday to Joyce
Suppah from Sophia M. <&
Deece R Suppah.
We were married in 1958. He was a junior at Eastern
Oregon College in La Grande. He graduated in 1962 and
we moved to Portland for his first teaching job.
We moved back to Warm Springs to run the Commu
nity Center. He was the first director at the Community
Center. He held a number of different tribal management
positions throughout his career.
We built our house and he did a lot of work on the
fencing around our property. Rudy did the landscaping,
planting trees and shrubs that today are beautiful.
When we moved back to Warm Springs, Rudy wanted
to learn the Washat Religion and went to the Queahpama
sisters, Nettie, Matilda and Syliva. We went to the
Simnasho Longhouse every Sunday. From there he got
involved with their Lincoln’s Pow Wow (Which they loved
to Pow Wow), started fund-raising every year from food
concessions to dance performances at different locations.
We really worked hard on keeping the Pow Wow going
for the elders that started the Pow Wow.
During our 47 years together, Rudy and I traveled near
and far. We made cultural presentations in Germany,
Hawaii, and around the United States. We presented at the
Folk Festival in Washington D.C. Our daughter Trudee
competed in dance competition in Canada and the United
States. She was Miss Warm Springs and we traveled to
Alaska and Sheridan, Wyoming. The high light was to see
her as Runner-Up in the Miss Indian America contest. We
traveled with her to compete in different pageants.
Rudy and I attended conferences at NCAI, ATNI,
State and federal meetings on gaming and education, in
different states. We traveled to Indian Country for differ
ent events.
Rudy was always a sports fan and participated in
different sports. I watched him play baseball in college. He
also bowled for the college team. We both competed in
bowling, traveling to Reno, Los Angeles, Las Vegas,
Wichita, Kansas, and Tulsa, Oklahoma. We bowled in
national, state and local tourneys.
Our family always had horses. We loved horses and still
own horses. We traveled with our daughter Trudee to
different rodeos where she competed in barrel racing. Our
granddaughter Shayla owned her own horses and rode for
leisure. Rudy and I enjoyed going to horse racing at
different tracks around the Northwest.
Rudy loved to fish. We went to the upper lakes and the
Deschutes River. He recently taught our grandson to fish.
Rudy took Congressmen, Senators, Governor Atiyeh
fishing.
As speakers said at the funeral, the youth was what he
focuses on. He coached baseball, bowling and counseled,
always encouraged education. He was a youth camp
director.
We had friends in all walks of life, pow wow, bowling,
rodeo, state and federal government.
Rudy was a very generous person, easy going, easy to
get acquainted with. I’ll remember all our family get
togethers for birthdays, pot lucks and just eating a meal
with some one. I’ll always cherish the gifts received
throughout
the years.
