Sisiley Scott, right, chats with Joeann Scott, Nakia Suppah and Rosie Tom over their
display of candies and Christmas treats during the Last-chance Christmas Bazaar at the
Warm Springs Community Center Dec. 21. The bazaar, which followed the annual Warm
Springs Christmas Bazaar on Dec. 10 and included all Native vendors, had fewer vendors
than in 2004, largely due to bad weather only days prior. Tom said she and her family
was snowed in their Seekseequa home, which gave them time to make candy and
popcorn balls. They had only a few left for sale by the mid afternoon.

Twenty-five years ago
(From the January 19, 1981
edition of the Spilyay:)
Delegates attending the Af
filiated Tribes of Northwest
Indians (ATNI) in Spokane
passed a resolution giving their
full support of Warm Springs
general manager Ken Smith for
possible appointment as Assis
tant Secretary of the Interior.
ATNI members also gave
their support to Del Lovato,
chairman of the All Indian
Pueblo Council, as special White
House Assistant on Indian Af
fairs.
Warm Springs Councilman
Olney Patt Sr. assured the
ATNI delegates that Smith
would accept appointment as
Assistant Secretary, if selected.
“We don’t want him to leave.
He’s very important to us. But
if he leaves, we’ll give him all
the support we can. I urge all
tribes to give him all the sup
port you can.” In other news:
After 28 years with the Bu
reau of Indian Affairs, with nine
and one-half of those in Warm
Springs, Superintendent James
D. Cornett is retiring.
His seemingly abrupt decision
was made as & result of a law
passed by Congress in Decem
ber that would increase retire
ment benefits for those eligible
if they were to retire within a
45-day time period.
