Diner honors veterans On Veterans Day the Black Bear Diner in Madras served free meals to anyone in active military duty, and to any veterans of military ser vice. "We served 196 meals to veterans," said diner owner Joe Davis. Many veterans from Warm Springs were among those who dined at the Black Bear on Veterans Day. "We served many people from the reservation who are retired from the military," said Davis. "It was nice to tell them thank you for their ser vice." From about nine o'clock in the morning until about eight in the evening on Vet erans Day, the diner was packed, he said. "It was one of the busiest days of the year." David said he hopes the idea of serving veterans for free on Veterans Day catches on with other restaurants. He got the idea originally from the Black Bear Diner in Bend, which served free Veterans Day meals last year. "I'd be delighted to see Joe Davis with one of the large stuffed bears at the diner. other businesses do the same thing next year," Davis said. Davis originally came to Madras in 1978 and worked at Jerry's Restaurant. 1 le was man ager of the restaurant in 1981 and '82. He became a district manager and then regional man ager of Jerry's from 1985 to 2000. Then Jerry's put the building up for sale, and Davis bought it along with a Black Bear Diner franchise. His son Stephen, daughters Melissa and Jennifer, and wife Nancy work with him at the diner, which is 16 hours a day 365 days a year. The hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Davis said he values the cus tomers who come to the restau rant from Warm Springs. "The impact of the people from the reservation on my business is tremendous," he said. "The folks who come here from the reservation arc great people." One of the first things you see when you enter the Black Bear Diner is a pic ture of MaryAnn Meanus in regalia. The picture was there at Jerry's Restaurant, and when Davis opened the business as the Black Bear Diner, he had the picture re-framed and kept it on the wall. MaryAnn, he said, has explained the significance of the different things in the picture, including the beaded purse with the im age of a horse.
