By Brian Monensen

Six weeks in the Denver area
during the summer, casli stiivnds
just for doing monthly home
work assignments, and an aca
demic program that will help you
not only get into a college but
also be ready for college.
Sounds like a sweet deal?
It's really not too good to be
true: It's the Upward Bound
program.
Upward Bound is an aca
demic program conducted by
the University of Colorado in
Boulder, geared toward helping
Native American students go to
college.
F-ach summer about 70 stu

they are in Colorado, the stu
dents enroll in courses like biol
ogy, chemistry, physics, nil lev
els of math, college preparatory
writing, computer applications,
study skills, journalism and
speech communication courses.
"It takes kids out of home
and off the reservation and puts
on a college campus with other
Natives," said Clark Jones, an
English teacher at Madras I ligh
School. Jones is the Upward
Bound site coordinator at the
schK)l.
Upward Bound recruits from
17 high schools near 11 Native
American communities in the

Museum open winter hours
The Museum at Warm
Springs has returned to its win
ter schedule for the months of
November, December, January
and February.
During the winter schedule,
the museum is open to the pub
lic Wednesday through Sunday,
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The closure will
allow for needed maintenance
and cleaning to the permanent
and changing exhibit galleries,
and other public areas.
Cultural artifacts and objects
currently on display will be in
spected, cleaned and conserved,
and some items may be changed
in and out of the exhibits. This
time to care for the artifacts and
the building, and adding the new
exhibit, is directly tied to the
museum's mission statement,
said museum director Carol
Leone.

said he has tentative plans to
visit Warm Springs and meet
with potential Upward Bound

Community Center.
Upward Bound hasn't had
recruits from Warm Springs in
a couple years, Jones said, with
Carina Miller being the last.
Overall, there have been
about eight from Warm Springs,
Jones said. About half of them
have gone on to college, and
