workshop, Tools of the Trade.
The workshop, at the Warm
Springs Small Business Devel
opment Center Oct 27, focuses
on professional development
for Native American artists.
Tools of the Trade focuses on
portfolio development, offering
the services of a professional
photographer to document
three artworks and the artist's
portrait.
Staff of the Oregon Native
American Business Entrepre
neurial Network (ONABEN)
will guide artists through the pro
cess of writing their artist state
ment, biography, and resume.
A CD compilation of digital
images and word documents will
serve as a portable portfolio for
each artist.
The workshop fee is $25. To

Artist to speak of
women in Native life
Wasco artist Pat Courtney
Gold, internationally renowned
basket weaver, will speak on
women in Native American cul
ture next week at Mitchell Mu
seum in Evanston, 111.
Courtney Gold has spoken
on "Native Culture and Native
Women" under sponsorship of
the Oregon Council for the
Humanities. She has addressed
groups of university and mu
seum professionals.
During her appearance at the
Mitchell Museum, Oct. 1'8,
Courtney pold also will share "
her research and perspective on
the Lewis and Clark Expedition,
focusing on the long-established
matriarchal societies of the Co
lumbia River, which the explor
ers encountered in the early 1 800s.
"Lewis and Clark didn't know
who was in charge," she says in
an article on the website
alternativevoices.org.
Harvard's Peabody Museum
recently commissioned her to
write an essay on the Wasco
basket collected by the Lewis
and Clark expedition in 1 805 and
registration is encouraged.
The Warm Springs Small
Business Information Center
provides business educarion,
training, administrative support,
technical assistance, and net
working opportunities for mem
bers of the Confederated Tribes
of Warm Springs.
The center provides access to
a business library and comput
ers for the community which
enables economic and cultural
exchange.

Her talk is in conjunction with
the Mitchell Museum's new ex
hibit, "Sisters to Sacajawea:
Women in Native American
Life," which opened September
and runs through Jan. 29, 2006.
The exhibit is designed to
complement the Newberry
Library's "Lewis and Clark and
the Indian Country" exhibit.
Courtney Gold's presentation
is funded by the Evanston Arts
Council, the Illinois Humanities
Council, and the Zonta Club of
Evanston, 111.
