Drunk driver sentenced for fatal crash
YAKIMA (AP) - A
former Warm Springs resi
dent with at least two
drunken driving convictions
in ( )regon has been sentenced
to two and a half years in
prison, a month below the
bottom end of the standard
range, for a fatal crash near
Wapato, Wash.
Relatives of Richard
Goucher, 53, who died in the
crash, said in Yakima County
Superior Court the sentence
for Lonnie Jack, 33, who
pleaded guilty to vehicular
homicide, was inadequate
given Jack's record and the
standard range of 31 to 41
months.
"I just don't feel 30 months
is correct," said Mike Goucher,
the dead man's brother. "I miss
my brother. There's no healing
of this scar."
Jack, who also agreed to pay
nearly $7,000 in restitution and
faces 18 months of probation
after his release from prison,
wept as he apologized to the
Goucher family in court.
"I'm sorry for all I have
troubled you," Jack said.
Richard Goucher died when
he and Jack were thrown from
a car after Jack pulled out in
front of another car at an in
tersection Jan. 27.
Everyone in the other car
escaped injury.
Heer cans littered the
scene, and investigators said
Jack was intoxicated and driv
ing without a license or insur
ance. "The greatest punish
ment," Judge Michael 11.
Schwab told Jack, "is this
cloud that will follow you the
rest of your life."
ack, who was living in
Wapato at the time, admitted
that he had a problem with
alcohol and promised never
to drink again.
"Do you think you will be
able to overcome this prob
lem?" the judge asked.
"Yes," Jack replied.
