Scholarship helps college student
Shayla l'rank, the daughter
of the late Jacob Frank Jr. and
late Trudee Clements, was
awarded the Adidas scholarship
recently. Shayla is the grand
daughter of Jacob and Winona
l'rank and Rudy and Anna
Clements.
Shayla graduated from
Sherman Indian I ligh School in
California in 2003, where she
was a member of the National
Honor Society and on the
principal's list with a 4.0 CPA.
Shayla received a social science
award at Sherman Indian High
School as well as being named
an outstanding senior award
winner. Selected to attend the
"Close-up" education program
in Washington D.C., Shayla
toured historical sites in the
nation's capitol. Shayla was also
listed in the 2003 National
Honor Society book (sec page
322).
At a young age, Shayla at
tended Washut religious services
at the Simnasho Ixnghousc. She
was an "all-star" student of the
month in elementary school and
a member of SMILE. She also
participated in 4-H, and at
tended OSU culture camps.
Following in the footsteps of
her mother Trudee, and grand
mother and grandfather Anna .
and Rudy Clements, Shayla en
joys bowling. She won awards as
a junior bowler in tournaments
and was a member of junior
league. In middle school, she
began running on her school's
cross-country team and was
team captain. Frank participates
regularly in the Reservation

Shayla Frank receives an education scholarship of $500 from
Kip Buck, of the Warm Springs Endurance Series, sponsored
by Adidas. Shayla was selected by the Education Committee
to receive the scholarship.
Relay, Kah-Nee-Ta mini mara
thons and the Hood-to-Coast
Relay, and in high school, she
was on the Challenge Team,
competing in the Portland-to-Coast
Relay.
Shayla grew up loving ani
mals and horse racing She loves
to ride horses and owned her
first horse "Chester" when she
was 6. I ler second horse was
Hank, who she bought from
Kitty Sharp, a former Miss Ro
deo Oregon. Shayla rode I lank
in parades at Pi-Ume-Sha and
county fairs, regularly placing
first or second for best dress in
full Indian regalia. Shayla has
also been a traditional and fancy
dancer and traveled to many
pow wows throughout the
Northwest and as far east as
Minnesota. Shayla is currently
attending Salish Kootenai Col
lege in Pablo, Mont., where she
majors in environmental science
and fisheries and wildlife.
Frank gives her teacher, Mrs.
Comment of Madras, a lot of
credit.
"Mrs. Commons has always
offered mc support, encourage
ment, and direction," she said.
Frank said she would also like
to thank Adidas for the scholar
ship and thank the selection com
mittee. Shayla is looking forward to
beginning her junior year at
Salish Kootenai college.
