The event, which drew
about 250 ptcsrs from the
museum s membership and
supporters, raised about
$5,1 ) than the expected jyiul

"We had excellent auction
items, very fine an pieces, and
it went well," Dora Smith,
development officer for the
museum, said. "The crowd
had a great time. Our auction
eer Steve Talbot did a great
job, and he made a difference
in the event."
The event included an oral
auction, presided by the Portland-based
Talbot, at Kah-Nec-Ta
I ligh Desert Casino
and Resort Saturday evening
and two silent auctions, one
at Kah Nee Ta and the other
at the museum on Friday.
"Our goal was to make
$80,000, and we pulled in
about $32,000 in sponsorship
and corporate tables and
$4,000 registrations," Smith
said. "With our combination
of auctions, we pulled in
close to $15,000."
In addition, die museum
sold tables for the Saturday
night dinner to corporations
for $1,300 each, earning
$17,000.
The I lucklebcrry Harvest
also included 1 1 co-sponsors
along with the museum, each
contributing $1,500 each.
Two-thirds of the
museum's budget comes
from events like the Huckle
berry Harvest, to which
about 1,500 invitations were
sent out. Other funding

First Indian
female judge
retiring
SANTA FE (AP) - A Santa
Fc judge who was the first
American Indian female state
district judge in the country is
stepping down next month be
cause of health concerns.
State District Judge Carol
Vigil, who is a diabetic and suf
fered an episode similar to a
heart attack earlier this year, will
retire Sept. 23. She has been on
the bench since December
1998.
Vigil, who has been on leave
from the bench, said she's been
in the hospital several times in
recent months.
She worked in tribal and state
courts in New Mexico and had
been an assistant state attorney
general before being sworn in
as a state district judge.
"I'm ready for my third life,"
said Vigil, 57, who is affiliated
with both the Tesuque and
Isleta Pueblos.
She said she'd been consid
ering retiring since the end of
2004.
"I never felt like I've gotten
myself together," she said. "I
kept feeling like I was getting
further behind in my work."
