Pge 14 Spilyqy Tymoo, Wqrm Springs, Oregon August 18, 2005 Beautiful gardens in Warm Springs By Tina Burnside and Rrigeltt Whipple OSU Muster Gardeners Have you wondered about the gardens and gardeners of Warm Springs? The OSU Mas ter Gardeners will feature differ ent gardens in the next few is sues of the Spilyay. It will give you some ideas of plants that thrive and other good ideas. The first garden is located in the Upper Dry Creek neighborhood. As I approached the house, the first thing I no ticed were lots of trees - big, green, leafy shade trees. Evlina Langncse has created a beauti ful and serene oasis in her yard. This garden has been de veloped over the last 28 years. It features several "secret gardens" and charming garden art includ ing her handmade stepping stones. By the garage, a charming waterfall and pond are home to huge koi and goldfish. The plants she selected for this area include soft gray-green foliage and flowers such as Lavender and Cranesbill. In another part of her gar den, shaded by the trees, I found several tiers built up to give the garden a layered look. These tiers are actually old tires, filled and covered with dirt, and then planted with minature roses, creeping thyme and coreopsis. This garden is a creative solu tion to giving the garden some height and less cosdy than bring ing in dump trucks of soil. As I moved behind the shade garden, I was amazed to find a long fence hosting stunning grape vines Vith luscious green table grapes, waiting to ripen in the hot summer sun. Again, the sunny garden had been built up with layers and Elina has a Rose garden along with many peren nials such as lupine, mums and lamb's ears around a dry creek "and pond. Elina has a recommendation for starting a home garden -start with the trees. Her front yard has ash trees (male variety so they don't shed), crabapples, river birch and pear trees in the rear yard. These trees all thrive in the hot summers and cold winter climate of Warm Springs. Elina, when not wandering in her garden or creating her beau tiful steeping stones, works in the CPS office. She will be our featured speaker on Monday, Aug. 22, at the Lunch & Learn session, held in the OSU Exten sion Services Building from noon-1 p.m. Bring your lunch and enjoy some snacks featur ing summer fruits and berries.
