Green has a great day at the rodeo
By Brian Mortensen
Spiljaj Tymoo
If the July 4 weekend is like
Christmas to a cowboy, then
Casey Green got an early Christ
mas present during Pi-Umc-Sha
weekend.
Green, from Warm Springs,
won the Calf Roping event by
himself and partnered with
Jesse Reese of Warm Springs to
win the Team Roping at the Pi-Ume-Sha
All-Indian Rodeo at
the Warm Springs Indian
Grounds June 26.
Green, 34, earned at least
750 for his part in two event
wins, making him the highest
money-winner from the two
day rodeo. '
"It's pretty profitable," Green
said with a smile. "A good day.
Another day in the office."
Green was the first, and only
one of three cowboys, to earn
qualifying marks in calf roping,
raising his hands in 9.97 seconds.
The next-best mark was the
mark by Cort Herrera of
Yakima, in 15.07.
Green said the small number
of qualifying rides over the
weekend was due to the sheer
scarcity of cowboys who per
form in that discipline.
"There're just not a lot of
them around here that do this,"
he said. "I do this for a living. I
was at rodeos yesterday and the
day before (June 24 and 25) in
Washington."

Casey Green, foreground, and partner Jesse Reese, both of Warm Springs, chase down their steer en route to a 7.78 time and
victory in the team roping in the Sunday program of the Pi-Ume-Sha All-Indian Rodeo at the Warm Springs Rodeo Grounds.
Green also won the calf roping event.
Green is in a virtual de for
first place in the calf roping in
the Columbia River Indian Ro
deo Association with I-awrcnce
Crawler from Morley, Alberta.
Crawler finished third in the
event, at 18.41.
After taking a no-time in his
team roping run with Justin
Tom, also of Warm Springs,
Green had one last shot to beat
the first-place time of 8.25 sec
onds by Carson Badonie and
Will Badonie, both of Wapato,
Wash. With Reese roping the
head and Green at the heel, they
combined to secure the calf in
7.78 seconds.
"I did miss one steer with my
one partner, but it worked out
okay," he said.
Green and Reese's time
stood up through two challenges
that would have bettered their
own time had not rules viola
tions marred the efforts.
Rick Watlamct and I Icrrcra
achieved a time of 7.34 seconds
but were penalized 10 seconds
for breaking the rope barrier,
essentially false starting.
Another pair of Warm
Springs cowboys, Calvin Bahc
and F-dison Yazzic, then regis
tered a time that would have
taken over the lead, had it
counted. They managed to rope
only one of the calf's legs at the
heel, for a 12.15 time, which was
good for third.
In addition to his high rank
ing in the Columbia River In
dian circuit, he's had some suc
cess in the northwest pro rodeos.
"I've had a good summer,"
he said. "I'm No. 2 in the team
roping standings and No. 3 in
the calf-roping standings (in the
northwest circuit)."
Freddy Warbonnet of White
Swan, Wash., won in bareback
riding with a 76 score, as Brad
Parrish was the only other rider
to stay on for the necessary eight
seconds, scoring a 73. Parrish
scored a 67 to win the saddle
bronc competition, though.
Maryanne Frazicr won the
ladies barrel racing, with a time
of 18.63 seconds, followed by
Courtney Frazier's 18.78.
Courtney Frazier, though,
won the ladies breakaway rop
ing in 4.01 seconds. Colleen
Crawler, of Morley, was second
in 5.47, and Shannon Adams of
Yakima was third in 5.80.
Roger Fiander and Herrera
won the century team roping
event, in which the age of both
ropers must equal at least 100
total years, in 8.47, and Junior
Sampson and John LaVallie
were second on 10.00.
In the junior events, Anthony
Blueback of Warm Springs won
with a 62 score, beating Trevor
Sampson of White Swan,
Wash., who had 56 in the ride
just before Blucback's, and
Kayonie Badonie won the jun
ior barrel racing in 19.87 sec
onds. In the Thurman Squiemphen
Memorial Wild I lorse Race, the
Rod Begay team won as the only
team to successfully saddle and
ride the horse to victory. The
Vern Squiemphen team had
saddled its horse first but could
not coax the horse to negotiate
the pole before its rider fell. At
the close of the week, Green
planned to hitch his horse trailer
with plans to make six rodeos
over the holiday weekend.
"The Fourth of July is what
they call the Cowboy Christ
mas," he said. "If you can get
to as many as you can enter, it's
a big payoff. "It's all on the
coastal side. We'll start in Sedro
Woolley, up by the Canadian
border, then we'll end up in
LaPine, and we'll start Friday."
