Friday, February 3 and 4,
2005 Austin and Lois attended
their son's basic training gradu
ation at the Marine Corps Re
cruiting Depot in San Diego,
California. We want to thank a
young Marine and her family
who made our trip a lot easier.

their daughter Kaili Leanne
Marie Hicks-Wert We would've
still been standing around at the
airport and lost if you folks
hadn't seen us. They picked us
up at the airport, got us a room
on base for the first night and
let us spend the second night at
their place. We ate well and slept
like bears and in the morning
they drove us to the graduation
ceremonies and then back to the
airport again.
It makes a lot of difference
when there are thoughtful people
helping you that know what is
needed and can help someone by
being hostful and caring, ex
pressing their good teachings.
Thank you. Our son is young
and has chosen to serve America
as a soldier, here he expects to
find out more about life as he
continues to seek. He reads,
writes and speaks English very
well and understands much
about the reasons of war. He has
always had the interest of being
what he is now doing. I tell him
to help people if you can and to
find their viewpoint, because it
is important to understand oth
ers as you understand yourself.

her accomplishments at
school. Katrina is 8 years
and in the third grade. She
attends Lincoln Elementary
School in Toppenish, where
she recently won the student
award for Tolerance. The
award says, "Katrina is pa
tient and understanding. She
is nice to all kinds of
people. " Katrina was born
in Oregon, and is an en
rolled member of the Con
federated Tribes. She lives in
. Toppenish with her mom and
sister.
She likes soccer and pow
wow dancing. "She is well
loved by her friends and fam
ily, and we are very proud
of her, " said her mom,

Lois and myself wanted to hap
pen in the Wasco way, we wanted
our son Austin L Smith Jr. to
be given his traditional Wasco
name. Since he being a male and
my father being a Wasco, the
name must come from the
father's side of the family. As
pointed out by his uncle,
Lawrence Squicmphcn Jr. I think
the name giving ceremony went
very well because of the blessing
done by the Washut drummers
and singers, also, for all the nice
items donated by both sides of
the family for the giving away
and most of all from the good
feelings extended through the
hearts of all the good people that
brought themselves to attend the
rejoining ceremonies and this
name giving ceremony on this
special day. Thank you, from the
heart to all of the Songs, Sticks
and Drums, that came together
making all things right through
the Washut drummers and sing
ers at this time and the good
words spoken by elders to our
son as he accepted his new name
through good motions. My fa
ther addressed everyone and ex
pressed the name and the mean
ing of the name chosen for him
to carry on, also, my father told
of where the name came from
and who carried it before him.
Thank all you good people for
helping us with this naming cer
emony and the way it happened.
It is good to be from Warm
