Tribal administration has a new look

The old carpet at the Tribal
Administration building lasted a
long time. It had been there for
25 years. The carpet - all 2,368
square yards of it - was as old
as the building itself.
The tribes have just finished
replacing all of the old carpet
at administration, a project that
took about six weeks. While the
re-carpeting work was going on,
the Bureau of Indian Affairs
realty department was relocated
to the area next to other BIA
offices. BIA workers also got
new dividers and desks.
The re-carpeting project cre
ated some hectic times for the
employees at the various depart
ments that are housed in the
administration building. The
workers had to move their
desks, computers, filing cabinets
and other furniture out of their
offices. Then they had to con
tinue working while the old car
pet was torn up, the phone lines
replaced, and the new carpet was
installed.
This took a couple of days
or more per department. To
keep working, the employees
used a conference room or
shared an office area.
The re-carpeting work was
coordinated so as to create the
least amount of inconvenience,
said Lynn Davis, tribal records
director, who helped plan the
project. "We had to coordinate
who would be where during
what times," Davis said.

building, and he said he appre
ciates their cooperation.
Graybael said that the next
step in the improvements at the
administration building is paint
ing. This will be done after work
hours or on the weekend to
avoid disrupting the depart
ments, Graybael said.
The idea of re-carpeting and
painting the administration
building was suggested about
three years ago, but there was
no money available at the time
and the project was put on hold.
Then in March of last year,
tribal officials decided it was
time something needed to be
done. Part of the issue, said
Graybael, is the agreement the
tribes have with the BIA.
The BIA rents part of the
building from the tribes; and the
tribes maintain the building up
to standard.
The carpet was getting so
worn in some areas that it was
becoming a real problem,
Graybael said. "It was getting to
be a maintenance problem,"
Graybael said.
The old carpet, he said, was
very durable, having lasted 25
years.
"I hope the new carpet lasts
that long," he said.
