Warm Springs Boxing club looking for sponsors
By Austin Smith
Boxing Coach
We are looking for sponsors:
The Warm Springs Boxing
Club: Warm Springs Community
Center Basement, 2200 Holly
wood Blvd., Warm Springs,
Oregon. PO Box 386, Warm
Springs, Oregon, 197761.
Boxing is a year round sport
and has been in some changing
times. Each year registration is
a requirement by USA Amateur
Boxing. Each January each box
ing club must renew their USA
Boxing dues. Registration pay
ments are itemized:
USA Boxing annual fees, due
Jan. 1, 2005:
Club $65 each.
Coaches $45 each.
Boxers $36 each.
Sanctioned boxing events
$275 each.
The Warm Springs Boxing
Club has been in existence for
many years and active in the
states of Oregon, Washington;''
Idaho, Nevada, Kansas, and
Vancouver B.C. It is our feeling
that we, as the only consistent
Native American Amateur Box
ing Club in the state of Oregon,
bring pride from our commu
nity to other parts of the United
States of America. People are
always interested in who we
Culturally represent as a nation
ality and where that culture fits
into the modernized aspect of
saying who you are and who do
you represent, and we're always
proud to share that competitive
pride with those concerned. We
think this sport delivers a lot of
public relational insight and does
weed a path to how we are go
ing to be in the years to come.
Round No. 1 and the End of
the Last Round are always the
starting point. The same goes
with the USA Boxing dues.
The Warm Springs Boxing
Club is a youth activity, and has
been a successful one in the Fall,
Winter, Spring and Summer sea
sons. Our annual USA Amateur
Boxing events that are held at
the Warm Springs Community
Center during the winter and
summer seasons are recognized
by the USA Amateur Boxing
World here in the Northwest
Region of the United States.
Although, we haven't sponsored
a boxing tournament in many
years but we are looking for
ward to hosting one within the
next two years. We take part at
local boxing shows and are gain
ing respect as one of the teams
who have quality athletes rep
resenting USA Boxing and "The
Warm Springs Boxing Club."
"'"The Volunteer Coaches:
James Holiday and Austin Smith
Sr. Both coaches have been ac
tive for the last two years. Their
services are all voluntary, and
they are at the boxing gym each
day from 4 to 6 p.m. Austin
Smith is the club manager and
has had that responsibility since
1985. This also is a volunteer
service. Volunteers are in de
mand; so, if you have the time
and can take and make this
community function a top of
the line event, then all you must
do, is make volunteer time, and
use it at the Basement Boxing
Gym at the Warm Springs Com
munity Center. Please, maybe
you have talents that can help
better this sport as a sport.
Check it out first. We're open
from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday
through Friday most of the
time, unless we've gone on a
boxing trip or something of
more importance has dctoured
this activity.
The Hand Full: Boxers are
local athletes and are enrolled
members of the Confederated
Tribes of Warm Springs Nation.
Each boxer shows talents that
are not recognized by educa
tional sports programs in the K
12 school system. Boxing isn't
yet considered a school auricu
lar activity. Although, it may be
at some date in the future.
Where a participant could re
ceive credit for it as a Physical
Education Credited Class: The
students now days have a load
of important educational stud
ies to be absorbed, and P.E. isn't
taken as an important lesson, but
P.E. is a required class. Credited
physical fitness activities could
be earned in an approved after
school curricular sport, such as
the USA Boxing program. This
would allow more time for class
room studies for the students
that are in need of the in-class
time.
Sanctioned Boxing Event:
Events like "The Battle on the
Res." Each High School Gradu
ating Class has a chance to in
vest towards the boxing pro
gram, like they have done for
the past three years. The class
sponsors our boxing event and
we host other boxing clubs to
come and box. A small admis
sion is charged, raises the funds,
and the proceeds are used to
wards a High School graduation
trip. Last year the class of 2004
went to Disneyland in Southern,
California. Another event is
"The Pi-Ume-Sha Treaty Days
Boxing Event." This boxing
show is a very popular contest
and is also a fund raising event.
The funds are used to attend The
National Native Boxing Cham
pionships here in the USA. Last
year we attended this event and
brought home one champion
ship and two runner-up contes
tants. We did good as a team and
made a good showing for the
Confederated Tribes of Warm
Springs.
If you can spare a chance
please use it on one or more of
the mentioned boxing items. It
will help a kid grow through
many of the youth obstacles
that catch many of our kids
here in our own neighborhoods.
Plus, the Coaches have nothing
but the community supporting
them. Thank you. Make this
year a better one for you and
your family, and your friends,
and tribal elders, and tribal mem
bers. Together we can do any
thing well.
All Sponsorships can be sent
to The Warm Springs Boxing
Club. USA Boxing Club Man
ager Austin Smith. Phone 541-553-3250.
