New Year holds
new goals and
accomplishments
By Selena Boise
Mantlet men t Successor
So have you thought of your
New Year's resolution yet? I am
still thinking that mine would
be to live for today because yes
terday is in the past and tomor
row isn't here yet.
I remember
hearing this saying
that went some
thing like: "When
you fret about the past, you feel
guilt, and when you fret about
tomorrow you are worried."
Feeling cither one makes you
forget about today. There was
this other saying that I was told
in the past that said something
similar. It was like: "When you
are thinking about the past and
the future, you have one leg in
the past and one in the future,
and you're tinkling all over to
day." I think that as long as I'm not
feeling guilt or worry that my
health will improve, and I would
be thinking positively.
So far I have been doing well,
and what happened in the past
is still in the past. That is, ex
cept for the good things, happy
memories and achievements.
I think that by becoming
more organized, as my 2004
resolution stated, that I am able
to keep a positive outlook on
everything. My husband said
that not being organized is
stressful. I can see that because
I was stressed.
I organized my files at work,
I organized my space at home,
and I have organized my time a
lot better. My time could be bet
ter, but I'm working on it
So continuing past resolu
tions and making new ones for
the New Year are working out
for me right now. I hope that it
is working out for many of you
because once they do you feel a
whole lot better about yourself.
Seems resolutions are always
about improvements that can be
made in our lives. Which is a
good thing if you can follow
through. And if you can improve
one thing each year and continue
with it through the following
year, it works out even better.
Casino at the Gorge
How about that casino that's
near the construction phase?
Seems like we've waited a long
for that to happen. I was excited
when the input from tribal mem
bers was being considered for the
construction and design of the
casino. Then when that was
over, there was a long wait to
hear anything else about it.
Recently there was word about
the new name for the casino at
the Gorge, "The Bridge of the
Gods." I'm still letting that one
sink in. I like the name Indian
Head Casino, but that was
changed to a new name.
I hope that all of it works out
for the tribes. I read in The Or
egonian that another tribe was un
happy with this casino in the
Gorge. That's too bad, because I
always thought Native Ameri
cans were one unit.
When I was in boarding
school all us students considered
ourselves Native Americans, and
it didn't matter what tribe we
were. It's really something that
youth can see themselves that
way, and then we return home,
get into the adult world, and find
that many things separate us
from each other. One of the
ugly ways is money, and it seems
like as adults we're acting like
kids and they do that thing kids
do when one gets more than the
other, "he gets more, I want
more." That's how it seems to
me, maybe I'm wrong, but that's
just my opinion.

New year
Happy New Year! Now we
enter the time of reflection; a
time to pause and look both
ways at once. In back of us are
the days of the past year to learn
from; ahead, the blank slate of
the future inviting us to dream
and then act to create more of
the world we envision.
Wishing you the best of a
meaningful and peaceful year
ahead, as well as hope that our
paths will cross soon!
Here's my wish for you and
me in 2005:
Simplicity. Generosity. Com
passioa Humility. Ingenuity. No
family Drama (Please Lord. I
am desperate). Instant Success
(oh well, it doesn't hurt to wish.)
Blessings to you and yours,

Appreciation
I would like to thank Winona
Strong, my friends and family,
and my mom Dcmpsena Polk
for their help and support in me
to go out and get involved in
community activities.
If I didn't have all you people
to support my actions in the
community, I don't think I
would have gotten to where I
am today.
I love you all very much.
Sallie Polk-Adams.
Live now
Can you all believe it's now
the new year of 2005? I hope
you all had a blessed new year
this year.
I've been doing a lot of
thinking about my past lately. I
- realize and know I can't go back
into my past and correct all the
terrible, horrible mistakes I've
made. It's all over and done with
now. We should just all live for
now in the present. I know
that's easy to say but very hard

easy to say, but may you all just
take it "one day at a time."

Proud parents
Congratulations and welcome
home to our daughter Olea J.
Yahtin. Olea went down to Riv
erside Indian School back in
August with goals in mind and
heart. Our daughter told us be
fore she left that she was gong
to become a boxer, be a cheer
leader, and make good grades.
Well, we are so proud of her
because she has accomplished
all three of her goals. Each of
these goals was important to her
and seemed to be out of reach
at that time. Well, when she got
to Riverside, she started train
ing in boxing right away. Then
her bouts were scheduled, and
she went in full-force with gloves
on, so to speak.
Olea has won all of her
matches except for one she had
before she came home for
Christmas break. Olea said she
couldn't concentrate because she
was too excited about coming
home for Christmas to see all

Now that
her Christ

coming to an
end, she is

back to school and boxing.
Olea went to the Oklahoma
State Championships before she
came home for break, and we
were proud to say our little girl
came home from the state
championships a silver glove
champion. Her next match is in
Little Rock, Ark., for the Arkan
sas State Championships.
So congratulations, Baby girl,
on everything you have accom
plished and will accomplish. Dad
and I are proud of you. Keep
up the good work. We love you
very much. Love, Mom and
Dad, Davis and Tia.
A prayer
I would like to share some
things the Lord has put in my
heart. A warning has been deep
within my heart. Please, do not
be fooled, for the Lord will not
be mocked. He knows the de
sires of each and every persons
heart and you will answer ac
cordingly. Proverbs 28:13 "A man (or
woman) who refuses to admit
to his (or her) mistakes can
never be successful. But if he
who confesses and forsakes
(turns from) them, he gets an
other chance.
Proverbs 28:16 "Only a stu
pid prince will oppress his
people, but a king will have a
long reign if he hates dishon
esty and bribes".
Proverbs 28:20:22 "The
man who wants to do right will
get a rich reward. But the man
who wants to get rich quick will
quickly fail. Giving preferred
great way
( hA
treatment to rich people is a
clear case of selling one's soul
for a piece of bread. Trying to
get rich quick is evil and leads
to poverty".
My prayer is for each and
every person who reads this.
The hour is near. It's time for
you to make a decision. You
have a choice but only you
could make that choice for
yourself. Please, the hour is near.
May you be blessed with su
pernatural strength to turn your
eyes from foolish, worthless and
evil things.
Letters of apology
On Nov. 25, 2004, I was driving down the West Hills
Extension Road with my niece. I had been drinking beer.
Police officer Sherwood activated his red and blue lights and
I did not stop because I did not want to leave the car unat
tended in West Hills. I was charged with DUII, reckless en
dangering and fleeing a police officer, and on Dec. 21 1 was
found guilty of these charges. I am sorry for drinking and
driving, and then not stopping when I saw the police lights.
Please accept this apology. I won't do it again. Eddie Medina
Aristeo.
To whom it may concern in the community of Warm
Springs. I apologize for committing an offense contrary to
tribal law and tradition. During a traffic stop early in the
morning on Nov. 25, 1 was found with being in possession of
drug paraphernalia. For my careless and unthoughtful ac
tions I was incarcerated and missed out on Thanksgiving
with my loved ones. So most importantly, to my family and
precious children, I am truly sorry. Brian Renfro.
To whom it may concern, I committed a crime that lost
myself respect and caused disappointment. I would like to
apologize to the Lord for my wrongdoing. I also would like
to apologize to my peers and any others I endangered. I
would like to apologize to them. Bad choices lead to a lot of
regret. I know, but have faith and things will turn out for the
best. God bless you. Louis D. Smith.
To the people of warm Springs, I'd like to take this time
to apologize to all my people on the Rez for my actions on
12-18-04. 1 was taken into custody for R.P. and P.V. I haven't
given up on daily struggle to better myself. Had a back slide
that I hope will happen less and less. It's a daily struggle for
me. But I hope to win this and be able to stay clean and
sober. So again I apologize to you all. Thank you for your
time. Laura Robinson.
to finish the year

For many young people the year 2004 ended on a good note,
with the opening of the Elmer Quinn Skate Park. A large crowd
turned out last week for the dedication ceremony, although it
was cold and rainy. For the official opening of the skate park,
Arlita Rhoan (above) gave an opening prayer, while Brandon
Caldera-Sohappy (left) was one of the first to try the new ramps.
Joseph "Cheeks" Boise conducted the dedication raffle, which
included helmets, boards and other skating items, as Sheila
Clements (foreground right) of Community Counseling, and
others look on.
