Burned land gets emergency logging status (AP) - After consulting with the Confederated Tribes, forest officials have decided that log ging can soon begin on land burned in the 18 fire southeast of Bend. Regional Forester Linda Goodman granted the salvage sale "emergency status," which means logging could be gin almost immediately. Deschutes National Forest officials estimated that if log ging were delayed for the re quired 105-day appeals period, the timber would lose about $124,000 in value. President Bush's I lealthy Forests Initiative grants regional foresters the au thority to declare an emergency to prevent substantial economic loss. Because timber in a salvage sale is already dead, officials say it is more susceptible to insects and disease that can lower its commercial value. The 18 Fire burned about 3,810 acres southeast of Bend in July 2003. According to the agency's plans, 1,886 acres of that area will be logged and replanted with saplings. The land was clear cut in the 1920s and contains mostly young ponderosa pines. Forest officials consulted with the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs before decid ing to move ahead with the project. The fire took place on lands ceded by the tribes in the treaty of 1855.
