By Selena Boise
Spilyay Tymoo
The Hood to Coast Relay
took place July 27-28 and saw
many runners from throughout
the U.S. plus other nations. A total
of 1,042 teams competed in the
Hood to Coast Relay, 318 teams
competed in the Portland to
Coast Walk, and 47 teams en
tered the I ligh School Challenge.
Among the 1,407 teams en
tered in the race there were six
teams from Warm Springs.
The Reservation Runners
came in at 984 overall with a
time of 31:20:02. In the mixed
team standings they were 280
of 303 teams. Their team cap
tain is Val Squicmphen, who has
competed in this race since 1986
to 1989. She now prepares to
get her team in the next race,
2005. She has had many run
ners on her team and she con
tinues to see runners competing
and experiencing this prestigious
race.
The Kah-Nee-Ta Teepee
Creepers competed in the mixed
open as well and placed 301 of
303 teams with the time of
34:00:01.
Their team captain was Joe
Tuckta who brought 12 runners
together for this event. They
had runners that competed for
years in this event and new run
ners, which consisted of a vari
ety of ages from 10 and up.
They came together and finished
the race in good time.
Lost in Pace has competed
in the Portland to Coast walk for
many years. They are an all
women team who finished Uii
overall, and 52"dof 150 in their
division at 28:21:01. These la
dies are all employees of the
Warm Springs Health and
Wellness Center in Warm
Springs. Their team captain is
Sharon Miller of Madras.
Wading to Exhale finished at
number 185 of 318 teams with
the time of 29:27: 14. They fin
ished at 83,J of 150 in the
women's category.
Their team captain is Earlynn
Squicmphen, who branched out
from Lost in Pace last year with
another team consisting of em
ployees of the Warm Springs
Health and Wellness Center.
New this year from Warm
Springs was Burnin Buns at the
Beach, whose captain was
Sophie Earl. Their team entered
in the mixed category and fin
ished at 148 overall out of 318,
and number 47 of 109 in their
category with a time of 28:41:57.
Also new this year was Port
land to Coast High School Chal
lenge team coached by George
Boise, who is team captain.
Team Boise placed 45lh of 47
in the overall and 15'h of 15 in
the boy's category. This team
went in with 8 members for a
12-member event, and did their
best to finish with a time of
20:55:55. Boise, and team mem
bers Randy Boise and Aaron
Heath ran two years ago on a
team entered from Warm
Springs called Shelly and the
Jets. This is their final year to
qualify for the high school chal
lenge, and they look forward to
competing next year in the
Hood to Coast Relay. Other
members of Team Boise were:
Chance Heath, Vance Brisbois,
Tonya Boise, Brandon Thomp
son, Josiah Thompson, and
Leanna Boise who filled in for
injured runner.
These teams struggled with
vacancies in their rosters each
year and so they begin early to
get their team together.
As Val Squiemphen stated,
"It's a year-round project, I am
starting now to get ready for
next year."
Other runners from Warm
Springs who competed on other
teams were Angela and Tonya
Selam, who were on a team
from Washington. Also Orvie
Danzuka, who was on the Spirit
Mountain team.
