company that provides custom
ized outsourced human resource
services to small and mid-size
companies.

few of their math skills too.
"We're trying to integrate fun
damental math and science into
our programs," she says. Fourth
and fifth graders aren't the only
ones who will be exercising their
skills.
"We're going to kindergarten
through the third grade during
physical education classes once
a month," says Hugie. "We'll go
"in and teach nutrition because
; physical activity and nutrition go
hand in hand."
Home economics is just one
of the topics Emilee Hugie will
be working on with young people
of the reservation, but it cov
ers a lot of ground - from bud
geting to preservation of food.
There's also health, safety and
cooking. Cooking is one of
Hugie's favorite things to do and
teach.
"I like to be creative with my
hands. I don't like to just sit
there and be told something. I
don't learn that way," she says,
"When it's hands-on, you get to
make a product and see the end
result. I like that process."
When a teacher enjoys what
they're teaching, the pleasure
rubs off on the students. Maybe
that's what happened when she
was teaching cooking to high
school graduates who were
headed off to college.
"We had a cooking class yes
terday. It was a blast," she said.
"They came and I got to show
them my recipes that I used in
college. We had a lot of fun with
it. They enjoyed it and so did
I."
Teaching is a pleasure, espe
cially when the students are in
terested in learning. Kimberly
Woolston is in charge of youth
development and 4-H, and she
may be Extension's strongest
advocate of the pleasures of
learning.
"You almost need a master's
degree to get ahead in this world.
That's just the way it is," she
says. "There's too much to know,
so you have to be an expert. It's
not like a hundred years ago
when you could know most ev
erything and be a genius."
Woolston is a passionate be
liever in education. She's happy
to pass that passion for learning
along to youngsters on the res
ervation. "Preparing young kids
for college is a mind-set," she
says. "You start them young, in
the third, fourth and fifth
grades, asking 'What do you
want to be?' Start talking about

Young people who get out of
high school and go on to col
lege leave the reservation. When
they return, they bring every
thing they've gained and can put

home. Leaving the reservation
isn't easy and a student putting
himself or herself through col
lege faces a difficult task. But it
can be done - especially if the
student avoids some of the mis
takes that many kids make.
Woolston is willing to pass
along her experiences of putting
herself through college as a
single mother, and the mistakes
her two sons made in college:
"I told the graduates all my
sons' little stories, like the time
the older one got all his finan
cial aid and wanted a new car
stereo. He bought a $600 car
stereo and was afraid to tell
Mom. Four weeks down the
road, when he's been eating Top
Ramen for two weeks, he finally
told me.
"I said, 'What did you learn?'

ample for young people:
"I never gave my boys an
option. They saw me going to
college and they knew that once
they graduated from high
school, they would be going to
college," she says. "I never told
them there was anything else that
was acceptable."
Woolston believes in helping
young people learn to love learn
ing. Once a love and respect for
education is accomplished, then
the time, effort and energy
poured into an education seems
like such a relatively small thing.
Especially when the students
bring it back home and put it to
work on the reservation.

show that Enron Corp. prof

At a news conference last
week, U.S. Sen. Maria
Cantwell, D-Wash., played a
tape of an Enron trader and
Enron executive talking about
the company's export of "fish
kill power" - energy from
dams that otherwise would
have spilled water to save
endangered salmon - out of
California to Southwestern
markets, where prices were
higher.
The Aug. 4, 2000, conver
sation between Enron trader
Tim Belden and Rick Shapiro,
an Enron executive, began
with Belden chuckling as he
noted it was hot in California
