From Warm Springs Tribal
Head Start Early Head Start
The Head Start Policy Coun
cil approved the following new
hires at their meeting on July 1 S.
William Rhoan was selected
as an Early Head Start home
visitor. He will work directly with
families who are enrolled in
Early Head Start, visiting their
homes on their designated days
and times and working with
them at the Early Childhood
Education socializations held on
Wednesdays.
William is a returning Head
Start employee, so he brings his
previous experience and knowl
edge, and he is ready for new
challenges.
Sheryl Potts is the Early
Head Start family intervention
ist. She is the supervisor of the
home visitors. Sheryl is a mem
ber of our community and has
working knowledge of commu
nity resources she gained as a
volunteer in various local set
tings. Alison Mitchell Schuster is a
Head Start teacher. She will be
working in one of our full day
classrooms. Alison has previous
experience as a teacher in ECE
and is excited about returning
to the program.
Candelaria Rhoan will begin
as a Head Start teacher assistant
when the teachers return from
summer furlough for the 2004-
05 school year. She has been
working as a substitute to gain
experience and to prove her
capabilities. Her positive attitude
is a wonderful asset.
We are happy to welcome
our newest additions to the
Head Start team. '

Fifteen students from Tokyo
International gave up part of
their summer vacation to vol
unteer at Warm Springs Early
Childhood Education.
Tokyo International is the sis
ter university to Willamette Uni
versity of Monmouth. The stu
dents spent time interacting in
the classroom with the children
and helping with some much
needed yard work around ECE
grounds.
Their efforts were rewarded
at a mini cultural exchange held
in their honor at ECE. The chil
dren performed exhibition
dances. Then during a short in
termission, appreciation gifts
were presented to each of the
members of the group. Thanks
to all employees and classrooms
who contributed gifts. The stu
dents performed a dance for
the children as well and the event
ended with a round dance.
Special thanks to Quartz
Creek for drumming and to
Mackie Begay for being the
MC.
Summer Youth and Higher
Education workers
It has been a busy summer
around ECE, and we are very
grateful to have had the help of
our summer youth and higher
education workers.
We currently have 27 total
employed in our building and we
are looking forward to the next
wave of youth who will begin
soon.
The students are employed as
office assistants, classroom aides,
janitorial aides and kitchen aides.
We have received a lot of posi
tive feedback regarding our
young workers, and we truly
appreciate all of the hard work
each individual has contributed
to our programs.
Congratulations to two of
these young ladies who recently
became mothers: Traci Soto and
Michelle Charley. Thanks for
your help and we wish you the

Registration and enrollment
update
We are still taking applica
tions for Head Start Part Day.
If your child turns 3 on or be
fore September 1, then he or
she is eligible to register. School
is due to start on September 8;
so if you have not yet come in
to fill out paperwork and to
meet with Family Services staff,
we urge you to call and make
an appointment today.
If your child is 4 and was in
Head Start last year, then he or
she is automatically re-enrolled
for the next school year. You will
need only to fill out a new emer
gency contact sheet and USDA
form at the Parent Orientation,
which will be held on Tuesday
September 7.
All new Head Start students
will need to have a current

attend a parent orientation. This
is a good time to meet the Head

other parents and Policy Coun

your child's classroom. Full day
students will transition to new
classrooms on September 8.

Fact: Children from age two to seventeen start fires
that endanger lives, cause injuries, death and burn
millions of dollars in property.
Fact: Children under the age of three cause a
majority of these fires and lose their lives in the
process.
This does not have to happen. Parents need to teach
their children about the dangers of fire and create a
fire-safe home.
